pitimpinai, I went through the thousands-of-bulbs thing last year. This year it's only hundreds. For one thing, I'm out of room for thousands more--I have to play "junior archaeologist" any time I plant ANYTHING to make sure I don't slice into something wonderful and dormant. The other thing is that planting is about the best "buns of steel" exercise I've found. Actually, too good. Last fall, in late November, when I went for a monthly hormone injection in my backside, I was so tight that the needle started to bend! I don't plan to bend any needles this year. My Scheepers, Old House Gardens, Lily Garden, B&B and Odyssey Bulbs mostly haven't arrived yet. The early orders came (Colchicum, fall-blooming crocus, some species lilies, stuff like that) and were promptly planted. It looks like the planting will begin in earnest next weekend, when those orders start arriving! Lisa

Sigh of contentment ^__^ Do you have various named cultivars of those? I only have one variety, and found out there is no such daff named as Yellow Hoop Petticoat. There is however a Petticoats on Daffseek, but no pics. I think the different cultivars of bulbocodiums are hard to tell apart, or at least they are from the pics. I REALLY appreciate that link of daffseek! I don't have mine labeled well, although I have the names so I need to get them organized in the spring. Yes, you are...and then we are going to have to see if I 'need' any you have...lol, and likewise. Now I'm going to have to look into daff societies & see if one is fairly close to me There is only one in KY and that is the one in Louisville. I know you are a good ways from Louisville though, but I'm not sure in what direction. Possible a surrounding state might be closer. Daffodil Societies across the USA The Kentucky Daff Soc just held their bulb sale Aug 8th. It is always the first Sat in Aug and is at Otte Nursery. Iris, Daylily, and Hosta Societies also have their annual sale there that day too. You could really get your fix there! Mark your calender for next year...lol Next weekend is another of the IN DAff Soc bulbs sales in Indianapolis. I'll be working there Sun. Might you need for me to shop for you some? All named cultivars are $3 and there is at least one blooming sized bulb, and some smaller bulbs with it. A lot of these cannot be found for purchase on line, or would be quite expensive if purchased from some of the 'better' growers. I know in shopping the Mitsch catalog, everything they sell is $5 or more for one bulb. I need to look up some of these I just got for $3 and see what they might sell for if available on line. Rose Royale is one I purchased it doesn't seem to be available on the net, but might be found in a daffodil specialty catalog. Dang...I never realized that Brent and Becky's carried so many cultivars. YIKES!!! I better stay away from there until everything I have ordered has been received and planted

OK, you asked for it! I have a dry rocky west-facing slope, has irrigation but it is hard to keep wet. So I planted bulbs that should naturalize even here in zone 9. The species tulips do not need cooling and actually increase every year. YAY! 25 Iris reticulata 25 Leucojum Graveteye Giant 25 Tulip Clusiana Chrysantha 20 Tulip Saxatalis 20 Tulip Sylvestris 25 Narcissus Baby Moon 25 Narcissus Bulbocodium 25 Narcissus Constantinople 25 Narcissus Thalia 25 Narcissus Quail 25 Narcissus Avalanche 20 Narcissus Erlicheer 10 Sparaxis Mixed 10 Freesia yellow 25 Ixia Panorama 10 Chinodoxia Blue Giant These were all planted at various level on top and around each other in a curving random pattern about 2 feet wide going down the slope about 2 feet to the right of a set of curving railroad-tie steps. Directly to the right and left of the steps, level with each step, I used concrete blocks to build small terraces. They are members of the jonquilla or tazetta group and should bloom without an extensive chill period...but this is very late to be planting narcissus...although I know zero about Florida gardening. Through an oversight, I forgot I had 250 Pipit bulbs and hastily got them in the ground just before Xmas. I was astonished at how firm and non-shooting they were, even at that late stage...and have hopes that there will be a mild enough spring to make up fir delayed root growth - I usually aim to get my narcissus planted In September when there are a few more months of warmth in the soil to encourage good roots. I have no idea of bloom times in Tampa...but in the UK, these Mediterraneans will be the latest blooming of all the narcissus...so root growth can occur in spring rather than autumn.
