Curb appeal: 1930s brick bungalow
Comments (14)I agree, not white trim. It's far prettier as it is (and would also be far prettier with a green or mustard) than it would be with white. Just because some neighbors have white trim is no reason to do the same. You're after curb appeal for your house, not matching the neighbors' houses. Also, if you painted it white, you would lose the impact of those very very pretty upper windows on the right. The stiles in the windows stand out because they are much DARKER than the blind behind them. They're very pretty and very "period." You can't leave them dark and paint everything else white, it would look strange. And if you paint everything a light color, you lose the visual impact of the window stiles (unless you put in black blinds, haha, but I'm assuming you're not going to do that). Whatever you do, make sure the window treatment in those windows makes a strong contrast with those stiles, so that they continue to stand out. What jumps out at me as a thing to improve is the porch surface. It's too bright for the house--it looks brand new and generic, which detracts from the bungalow look. The link below is to a random stone supplier whose website happens to show a lot of different outdoor stone surfaces; something like that could really add to the bungalow look, the period look, and thus the curb appeal. I totally agree with Columbusguy on the flowers and the small tree. Depending on your climate, a redbud or a dwarf Japanese maple might be just the ticket. Here is a link that might be useful: Stone surfaces for porch...See MoreCurb Appeal for our 1920s Foursquare
Comments (38)We have a four-square house built in 1920 and have been researching how to improve curb appeal also! Glad I found this thread. My thoughts regarding the house you're considering would be to extend the roof of the front right sunroom to a full front porch. That would present a symmetrical appearance on the street side. We actually have a defined side entrance and a front porch with the main entrance, but the driveway goes to the side door. The builder of the home was a doctor, and he used the side entrance for patients. There was also a back door to the house, and an exterior door to the kitchen (the kitchen was built as a separate building that abuts the back of the house)....See MoreCurb Appeal for my Cali Bungalow on a Slope
Comments (44)I like the blue color and the wooden garage door. I would leave the ivy and plant two flowering trees like Yardvaark suggested - perhaps crepe myrtle. Terracing would be very expensive, and think of the maintenance. Even with stone work gardening on an incline is not fun. Also find some very modern and luxe house numbers. Make the window box and a couple of great pots the showstoppers. You can hook up a self watering system to these and they would look great and be low maintenance. I just did this last year and the inexpensive self watering system made it so easy....See MoreCurb Appeal/Exterior Renovation Ideas for 1920s Dutch Colonial
Comments (5)Your ideas are perfect and will definitely add curb appeal. Dark blue grey with a white trim will look smart and a few more details like the foundation slats suggested above is a great consideration depending on the landscaping. Here are some inspiration pics. I hope this helps. #1 Note the white railing, white stair and white round columns. Also a simple straight awning along the porch and matching awnings on the second floor give this sweet curb appeal. Looks like boxwood along the foundation. #2 Note the heavier white railing and tapered square columns. You may want to consider doing a heavier trim around the windows and door. #3 Cute idea with a curved trim around porch and shutters on the second floor windows only. #4 Note the very interesting decoration at the peak of the house and with a paint color change! #5 Again note this interesting decoration at the peak. It doesn't have to be a window at the peak, it can be a louvre oval painted the same as the trim. This shows how nice a heavy trim around the windows and doors look. Don't forget the most important focus is your front door. It should be important and welcoming. I love all the moulding around the front door. #6 Again heavy white trim, square tapered columns, white stair. Love the hydrangeas! #7 Beautiful inspiration #8 Note the double round columns. I tried to find a better pic, but if you can imagine, the top part of the peak is scalloped shingles....See MoreFlo Mangan
