Refinishing Butcher Block Table

Has anyone refinished a butcher block table similar to this one that could show me some photos and explain a little about how you did it? I will be using this table for a home office and would love to have a natural wood look with matte poly.

I don't have photos, but there are a couple ways to tackle this.

Both require a good sanding.

sand, clean and seal, many thin layers of finish, complete drying and light sanding between coats.

You can also, Sand, Oil, and Wax, then buff to a nice natural finish.

I like a nice oiled finish on butcher block it is easy to fix if something gets on there you don't want and if at some later date you actully want it near food then no problem It looks like it is in good shape now so why refinish it for a desk. If it needs sanding then sand and use a food safe oil

This isn't making a lot of sense to me. A piece of glass over the butcher block seems like a lot of protection to me. So if you are not going to use it as a butcher block then it's just a piece of wood so paint it with whatever. If it is a butcher block that you actually chop on then mineral oil is the only thing I use on all the ones I build. And you wouldn't paint over oil it wouldn't stick. John

Save the sanding particles and mix with a food safe/water proof glue. The mixture should be same as putty is. Then patch as you would with wood putty. A common solution furniture refinishers use.

Your planned approach is correct. A varnish would be about the most durable finish that you can apply outside an industrial setting. Most quality oil-based varnishes will impart some amber color. "Golden Glow" means different things to different people. The natural color of the wood and the choice of varnish will have impact on the resulting color. Once stripped and sanded, wet the top with a bit of mineral spirits to get a preview of the natural color. If that's not enough color, you can use a stain before varnishing. Waterlox would be an excellent choice. Polyurethane would do if you wish. Wiping on Arm-r-seal (General Finishes wiping poly) would work. Here is a link that might be useful: wipe on varnish finish

"When completed, I plan on having a piece of glass covering the table since this is our kitchen table." The glass alone should be more than adequate since the table is NOT a work surface. At most a layer of water based poly (it has less tint than just about anything else) will provide some protection if anything gets under the glass (a drip a the edge can travel between the glass and table by capillary action).

Depends are using it to make food on or as a dining table? If using top for food baking would sand it down use regular mineral oil. You stain or paint the legs. You have keep putting the mineral oil on when looks dry or water doesn't bead. If just for eating stain it whatever color you like and seal it.

Husband just renovated our kitchen and got butcher block counter top prep with this product to seal it. 3 coats wait 1 hour each coat and then left the last coat overnight and buffed it in.

Home office. So yeah, strip, sand, stain (or not), and clearcoat.

It looks like rubberwood (AKA parawood). If so, do some googling for specifics for that wood. It should be a nice color when it's naked.

Look on YouTube for videos to illustrate how to do it. Are you sure that's actual butcher block? those little pieces might indicate a veneer instead.

This is what the top looks like. These photos are from the person I bought it from on Marketplace yesterday. It's currently taken apart and I can't get to it to take more photos right now.

Well it's not oak or maple which are typically used in making butcher block. I'm guessing this might be rubberwood
