What does it look like with the lights turned on?

You are right. When I told my decorator I wanted a muted blue-green bathroom paint, she suggested Farrow and Ball Skylight, which is similar to Sherwin Williams Sea Salt. I told her the chip looked gray, but took her advice anyway. It's plenty blue, although it looks more green in some lights so you may want more of a true blue-gray.

What white is on the cabinets? Your photo shows a pink influence...light coming in from south or west?

Consider a chameleon color...one of my favorites: B.M. Gray Cashmere...it never show gray, but often green, often blue, depending on natural light.

The only person who can really say if it's too blue or not is you. IMO it is the wrong shade of blue for the room. Your floors are very warm. SW describes this color as having a violet undertone which wouldn't be my first choice to go with the floor and I'm not sure about the cabinets, either. In the picture they look like they're leaning yellow. A blue with a green undertone would work better. Sea Salt is a popular SW color that is maybe more green than blue, but how it looks depends on the lighting you have. How far you can move toward green also depends on whether this room opens up into another room. Are there furnishings in an adjacent room that caused you to choose blue? Your floors look a little orange. If you put blue next to orange it will make it more pronounced.

As for whether the contractor is annoyed, I'm sure this isn't the first time a homeowner has changed their mind about a color. Hopefully he'll be able to paint over it if you decide you really don't like it. If he has another job lined up after yours that could present a problem. This is just proof that it is very difficult to pick a color from a chip. Frequently you just don't know until you see the color on a wall whether you'll like it or not. Live and learn - next time sample a large swatch on the wall or on a separate board before the painter comes.

It would be very sad to not love your new kitchen and it sounds like you don't love this color. I don't either. It feels kind of juvenile. Yes, you'll piss off your contractor if you select a different color and I'm sure they are used to this. People make color mistakes all of the time. I agree that there is nothing subtle about this blue and it doesn't look nearly as refined as what I think you are likely going for.

How did you select your paint? Did you paint large 12" x12" sample colors on multiple walls and look at them at different times of day with lights on and off? This is the way it should be done. If you don't want to paint samples directly on to the wall then paint them on to a poster board that you move around to different locations. Or you can order prepainted samples from Samplize. You are supposed to peel and stick them to your wall but I don't. I just tape them up and move them around.

I used F&B Skylight in a bedroom, and love it. It changes subtly in different light conditions, which is a quality I look for when choosing a paint color.

Did you buy a sample can to test the color in the room first? I think the blue just depends on what you wanted. I’d definitely stop the process if you’re not happy with it.

That is almost exactly my daughter's kitchen color scheme! She's loved blue since the day she was born, so she fell in love with the kitchen the moment she walked into it. It seems fresh and crisp and clean and airy, but it's not my color scheme.

Does it go with the rest of your house, especially adjoining rooms?

My old kitchen was a light blue and I loved it. So i thought a slightly brighter color would work, but it doesnt seem to. we were going to paint the adjoining room the same color (its a dining area).

Kendrah mentioned samplize.com. I’ve used them several times…very helpful. Their samples are made with the actual paint color instead of computer generated.

My mistake, i only held up paint chip samples. I’ve never chosen paint colors!

Most of us have done the same thing at some point. Give Samplize a try and/or buy the little sample cans of colors you want to test. For our last project (home’s exterior) I had 9 sample cans and 4 Samplize swatches to help me decide. Could not have decided without them. Those little chip samples can give you a general idea but never good for testing throughout a room/space.

I also scroll through the internet to see how it looks in various lights for other people.

My problem is i feel short on time. i didnt really know what it would look like until it was all together, but the contractors want to keep moving.

Has the contractor bought the paint for the dining room yet, do you have a chance to change its color? It might not be a bad idea to let it proceed, then live with both rooms for a while before deciding if it's okay as is.

Although for me personally I like the looks of that B.M. Cashmere Gray posted above, because it doesn't look like "gray" to me.

I recently purchased 4 gallons of paint I decided I didn't want and they could not be exchanged. Don't know if your contractor has a better relationship somewhere that he is able to do that. I get being pressed for time and the contractor wanting to move on. Ask if he can wait until Monday. Spend the next two days and the weekend figuring this out.

Narrow your colors down from good suggestions others are making on here and then paint samples yourself on to poster board. It will take too long to get them from samplize, unless you pay outrageus overnight shipping.

I like it.

But I'd get a lighter shade of it for the dining room.

The blue of the walls seems off against the warm tone of your flooring. The blue seems very cool in comparison. Would suggest you halt the painting process and get some large scale stick on samples to help you decide exactly which color seems best.

Once a can of paint has been tinted, I don't know of any store that will take it back. But it's worth asking your painter.

The paint shop may be able to add your paint to additional gallon or two of white base and tints to lighten/change- using 5 gal. recipe. worth a try it is a bit bright, maybe lighter and slightly greiger!

Sometimes you get a gut feeling and know. Trust that reaction. After over 20 hours sanding/painting my kitchen cabinets, I cried; loved the color, but it just didn’t feel right. I ended up painting the lowers black and knew in an instant I loved the effect.

Think about how a backsplash and accessories will affect the overall feel. Also be sure to test on a large area in dining room and that could be a helpful factor in your decision. It also depends on what your accessories are in dining room if you want both rooms the same.

Recommend a backsplash that ties in the floor, cupboards and walls and subtle enough to work with counter; test lots of samples, as it‘s another important decision.

If still unsure, suggest a softer blue/green and purchase a quart, testing in both rooms (and look at during different times of the day). You can always repaint that area in kitchen, without having the painter do. I’m a fan of a softer feel and have throughout my home. Reflect on your choices throughout your home.

I like it. Its looks similar to the color, I have here. I never tire of it, and its been on the walls for several years now.

whether that blue works or not depends on how you intend to finish the rest of the space. I like watching Caroline Winkler’s decor videos on Youtube. She has has a small apartment kitchen which she painted a deep blue, even though she has dark cabinets, and I love the look.

I really appreciated seeing the colors and discussion in the post you shared, Chloebud. I had Northstar on my radar and it was nice to see photos of it. Personally I didn't care for it paired with the gray, but still enjoyed all the examples and photos. That was a good blog.

I think your decision to repaint is a good one. Something softer, paler and less intense. A slightly greyed blue would be better. Looks like you have some larger samples and agree BM Grey Owl or SW sea salt are both very pretty and worth investigating. Good luck.

For what it’s worth I just used mountain air and sea salt. Hands down sea salt is better. And it’s mostly green but it does look blue and gray in some lights. There’s just something about it that feels classic and not juvenile, even though it’s light. I’ll probably use it for another room soon.

Silver Strand looks like a good choice to me. I looked at a few of those links discussing it and showing examples. It is another chameleon color similar to Sea Salt and another deeper one, Comfort Gray. I have used sea salt and I have seen Comfort Gray in another house- I really like both of them. I also like Silver Strand which I haven't seen in real life. I think they all have the right amount of neutral but color and would be very nice in your kitchen----but I am not a pro.

I used SW Rainwashed in my last kitchen that looked similar to yours. Slightly deeper and bluer than Sea Salt. I thought it looked nice against wood tones.

The original blue colour seems in opposition to the warm floors, stark white cabinets and black knobs. I feel you would want more of a white/neurtral grey to look better, or to have grey/neutral timber floors...the use of many understones feels uncohesive..

I am really loving that color. It is so soft yet not so soft that it is without the blue and green hues.

Another trick, if one likes the color, but is still afraid: have the paint store reduce the intensity by 50%.
