House elevation, Now I'm unsure about the style
Comments (24)I think the house will look great with all shingle siding, high quality 6 over 1 or 4 over 1 windows like in the drawing, the garage doors on the side, and substantial, well-proportioned decorative trusses under the gables. I think (except for the siding choices) the photos where these elements are missing look much worse than the elevation drawing. If you are looking for simple and timeless I think the roof lines might be a little busy and the decorative trusses might be a bit much, but in 2008 they look good to me. re: those dream picures I like them too. Unofortunately I don't think you will achieve that effect if brick siding strains the budget. A poster called allison0704 (?) built a gorgeous home that reminds me of you photos. She achieved that effect, but her $/sf had to have been very high. I suggest you look at shingle-style homes. They are more authentic becasue they are an American style, they are timeless (as much as anything can be), and you can choose various levels of finishes and degree of interior decoration without sacrificing the overall effect. For example, moderate price maple cabs with a bit of a shine from a big box store would look OK in a simple shingle style house with painted trim. They would look really cheap and out of place in a grand manor. If stained woodwork is a dealbreaker for you this might not be a great option. Comments (13)I'm sorry to be vague; I see a lot of the inset cabinets here, esp those that are finished onsite and maybe its the painting technique but I rarely see "seams" where two separate cabinets join. It looks almost seamless. With full overlay, that won't be an issue because the doors are almost flush with those on either side. With inset (especially my island for example, which is made up of 5 difference cabinets pushed together) the lines (I think) will be distinct. Am I blowing this out of proportion? Basically I don't want these cabinets to look like the ready to assemble cabs they are, and I can't decide which will look better. I guess I would like to see some pics of inset cabs with a painted factory finish; not painted onsite. Junicb, right now it's crystal white or frosty white onsite. I'm not wild about their white/cream choices because they seem to have a lot of pink or yellow cast, but one of those will work....See Moreso stressed about kitchen paint color or tile
Comments (5)a recent new home for you? You've added the pale blue just to kitchen? I would continue with paint in the family room. Go for a cool based off white. the mustard yellow is not agreeable. the pale blue with your counter and black/white mosaic does work. Try to get a small bit of molding across top of wall cabinets. then don't do anything. the layout and the island and the higher sitting position has to be dealt with by your family for a while. It's possible with different family room furniture positions you could get a bigger, normal height island with much better seating. the overall layout of kitchen may have some issues not apparent yet. But it might be okay as well. Point is: uncertainty is ahead of you for a bit. the black white mosaic altho unusual, is fine and the blue paint works much better....the more important thing is the island itself and perhaps some changes to make a better island, not just eliminating the mosaic. I might paint the black stools a high gloss red for fun/exuberance ….and go on to the family room walls while settling in....See MoreJust moved into a resale home and unsure about decorating
