Pocket door? Door swing directions??
Comments (6)Been waiting to read more responses to see if i can get this, but not gettin' it. We remodeled our two baths into one larger w/ a half bath and i changed the swing of the door to open out into the hallway. We have a small hallway comparitavely (36"), leaving about 32" in the area of the open door counting it's thickness and leverset. The door opens up flat against the hallway wall. We enjoy the freed up space in the bath because we only use the hallway as just that, a hallway. The door is almost always open w/ just my wife and i but when guests use the bathroom, they simply shut the door. I might see this being a hassle w/ a large family that has eight children w/ constant heavy traffic in the hall, but overall, im not seeing this as being too big a deal. Just a thought!...See MoreEnd of the hallway?
Comments (40)musicgale - That is a very nice picture indeed and we are playing with the design to see what could be done (in terms of storage and making the hallway a more functional space as opposed to a long corridor) by widening it out. We are still unsure if having something as long as it is will post a problem and require a design change but will update shortly on whether embracing it will be an option. We did check into those other floor plans/house designs that were recommended and in fact have fallen into the rabbit hole of even contemplating buying the plans of a ready-made design off the internet lol - who knew you could do that?! At the very least we found ourselves flicking through what seem to be houses of the "rich and famous" trying to source ideas of layouts, etc. Some houses are so large and confusing that one would need a map to get around there! Others have designated quarters for maids and butlers - how nice that would be :-). Ultimately however, we found that while many of these mansion like houses are very nice from the outside we questioned the usability and functionality from a living point of view - at least from our family's perspective. This led us to the conclusion that something a little more unique to our lifestyle/property was the way to go than an off the shelf solution that would require modifications. Doesn't mean we can't borrow a bit of inspiration however! martha - we are indeed homeschooling our 4 kids and plan to use the library for that purpose until they are old enough to do their schoolwork in their room (we tried to make their bedrooms big enough for a desk in each). We are trying to piece together your idea about placing the library on the left of the kitchen but are a little confused by that. Do you mean to switch the location of living room and library or did you mean to say have the library on the right of the kitchen?...See MoreHow to place runner rug in narrow hallway with angled door at end?
Comments (5)Just about any major carpet store can help you by making a custom runner and not too pricey. The cheapie way would be to get 3 short rugs (all the same) and arrange them evenly following hallway path. HD offers a limited variety of runners thru a vendor and perhaps vendor can do custom runner...See Morestained pocket doors, white doors in same space
Comments (6)You can, but should you.... Traditionally, painted wood was used in the utilitarian spaces (bath, kitchen, work areas... sometimes bedrooms) and as Jan said finished wood (sometimes higher quality) in the more public spaces. These doors you mentioned - you said they are all visible from main hallway as you enter the house so that kinda puts them in the domain of "public space." What's happening with the trim - I would prefer it stained same wood color as doors, consistently throughout the downstairs public spaces. However if you are doing the wood door + painted trim thing.... then yeah, paint the doors you mentioned the same color as the trim. If the trim is stained wood then leave all the doors stained wood. Essentially, you dont want to draw attention to those two unimportant doors, so I would do them the same as however the trim around them is done....See MoreHU-548469922
