OK, we have agreement. Thank you! Oenothera speciosa. I'm embarrassed. Our highway department, in the interest of spreading Texas wildflowers, dumps these seeds (pink version) all over the place. I had just never encountered it in the wild. I gather it is potentially invasive though, where I saw it, I would enjoy seeing a lot more of it. The bloom is supposed to open late in the day, but I saw this bright and early in the morning. Maybe it just hadn't closed up yet.

It may be an aggressive spreader (via seeds and rhizomes) but as a US native wildflower, it cannot technically be considered invasive.

O. speciosa can bloom day or night but the flowers do close up in strong sunlight.

It can be very aggressive, but as gadengal says, technically it isn't an invasive. By definition, an invasive is an introduced species from outside of the native ecosystem. That doesn't prevent some natives from being downright nasty in the right (wrong!) situation. But I've managed to kill a quite extensive, purposely planted patch of Oenothera speciosa with kindness. They DON'T need extra water or fertilizer. They will grow lushly, bloom like freaks of nature, and promptly...

They prefer good drainage and a lean soil, which my red clay substrate doesn't supply.

You can weed whack them after they are finished blooming. They will grow new shoots. I find them a welcome "pest" in my garden. This is at my mother's garden though.
