Got a backsplash quote today - are you kidding me?
Comments (44)There was no lack of transparency, other than the fact that prices weren't listed on the walls or on the tile in the store (in my experience they never are except maybe at the big box stores) . I saw the tile, went to the salesperson, and asked her to price it for me. I'm not really sure why that's a problem. The only problem I had was with the price once I got it! No different than if I picked up a nice blouse at Macys and it didn't have a price tag. Take it to the sales person, find out the price, decide if you want to buy it (if I picked up a blouse I liked and expected it to cost $100, but it cost $1000, I wouldn't buy that either LOL)...See MoreTo granite backsplash or not to granite backsplash?
Comments (9)I don't like the 4" backsplash for the following reasons: - if you are doing a decorative tile for the rest of the backsplash, you are now decreasing and cutting off your design area by 4". - the 4" creates a little "shelf" that gets dusty, just one more thing to clean. - added expense to install the 4" piece of granite along your countertop. - people who say you "need it" to cover a gap between the countertop and the tiled wall just don't have good installers. My kitchen walls are extremely out-of-plumb, but my tile backsplash meets my granite countertop with no gaps cause I had experienced installers. - IMHO it looks dated, since the 4" idea was popular with formica in the '70's. I would only do a 4" backsplash if I were doing no other backsplash at all and just leaving drywall on the rest of the wall. And even in that case, I'd try to make it a little higher, like 5" or 6"....See MoreNo idea: is $600 reasonable for backsplash installation?
Comments (18)It sounds like you have done some checking and they are reliable. Just make sure someone is home when they work so you can call a halt if things are not looking good. It sounds like that won't be an issue tho. People who know their job and work well together can whip thru something a lot more quickly than an amateur. So they might still make good $$ even with the lower price. We just hired a painter who came in and did a lot of our walls for a pittance compared to what I hear others pay. But he did a beautiful job, 2 coats, all in one day and made $50.00/hr. So he made a decent wage and we didn't go broke. It would have taken me days just to mask all the trim and baseboards etc. He didn't mask a thing and didn't get a speck of paint anywhere it didn't belong. A tile pro will work the same way, fast and efficient....See MoreKitchen backsplash height, existing 4" backsplash, and ending dilemma
Comments (9)I have a similar question five years later: Is the 4" matching back splash now out of style? And how long will it stay out of style? Doubt that it would be possible to get a full matching back splash 14 years after the home was built. I am considering removing the 4" back splash and going with a complementary tile or, perhaps, a colorful wallpaper. Thoughts as to how long the short back spash will stay out of style? (I'm old enough to remember bell bottoms - the first time they were in style.)...See Morenicoletouk
