Flooring Design Dilemma DIY

paint or stain?

I removed carpet from stairs and they had paint/stain that I stripped. The plan was to stain the treads and paint the risers. I removed the staples, etc, removed as much of the paint/stain and sanded 2 of the treads a bit just to see what they looked like.If I stain more/use wood filler to fill holes do you think

these can be stained or are they too damaged? Im assuming they are pine?

If you want the easy route? Paint the treads and the riser. Add a runner and call it a day.

Sand the heck, fill the holes.

Or............get new treads: )

The hood is already powder-coated, but I want to change the color from white to brown, to blend with the cabinets (Ikea Akurum with Orsa birch fronts). Is it possible to powdercoat over a powdercoat? Or would I have to strip the original powdercoat down to the steel?

Your post reads like you are considering two options. If you refinish the floors (a lot of work and mess) they would have to be sanded, re-stained and re-sealed. A darker stain (as you mentioned) would look nice ... a mocha color or something with a warmer brownish hue. If this is your route ... I'd leave the window mouldings alone (which look like pine but I'm not sure). Matching stains on different woods is challenging but do-able. If you re-stain the floors, would you refinish the stairs too? The stringer looks like an oak veneer but the spindles and bannister look like solid oak. I see your challenge as you have about 3 or 4 wood stains going on. Are you going to keep those blinds? and the curtains? The blinds kinda look cool with the current floor (which is in very good shape by-the-way and I like it too -- as the poster above mentioned). Your plan should depend on what you DISLIKE the most and go from there. What I would do (DIYer that I am with a limited budget) is ... keep the floors as is. Paint the window mouldings your wall color selection. Remove the curtains, keep the blinds or change the blinds to be the new wall color. Paint the stair stringer cladding and the spindles your wall color -- keep the bannister as is. Bascially, get the wood floors and what elements of the stairs you want "woody" in a similar stain. Paint anything that doesn't fit that plan. You might want to try the Home Decorating Forum too.

I don't know about the staining....You could possibly buy a small can of really dark stain and see if you could darken it a bit. As for painting, definitely use a SEMI-GLOSS. It's not too glossy...just right for furniture.

Once they are installed, they turn dark grey. i felt the same dread when i saw my delivered planks stacked in a pile in my yard 2 years ago - as far as i was concerned, they were navy blue. Tears may have swelled up - my whole deck plan was based on dark grey planks. i convinced myself to take the chance and i dont regret it - our finished deck is beautiful. My biggest petpeeve is dust - the dark grey shows dust - i bought a boat deck brush attachment for my garden hose and brush it down once a week

I need to see them from much further back very often carpeted stairs were never meant to be uncarpeted. I do agree the best you will get out of these is sand , fill, paint and add a runner .

whether or not to stain/paint depends on how everything else looks.
