upstairs hallway carpet

Hi! We are recently installing a carpet on my stairs. We are thinking if we should extend it and carpet the whole upstairs hallway (stop in front of all the bedrooms). Do people ever do that? Will that not look good? Thanks for your opinions!

Depends on what your current floor is. If you have hardwood, absolutely not.

If you have hardwood stairs, I wouldn't cover them up with carpet either.

Pros and cons to carpet, and pros and cons to hardwood or other flooring. What is your current flooring, on the stairs, hallway, and bedrooms? How many more years do you anticipate staying in this house?

Carpet is softer underfoot and a bit quieter which is nice to muffle footsteps on the upstairs level. A good installation will protect any hardwood underneath it, nice for future owners who might want to uncover it. Carpeted steps are easier for dogs to navigate! Continuity is good, for visual pleasantness. Without seeing your space I'd guess that continuing the carpet in the upstairs hallways is a good thing.

On the con side, carpet wears out especially in high traffic areas; and stains/spills are more difficult to clean up; and visually many people would prefer all hardwood to any wall-to-wall carpet.

This is a budget thing that I thought I would really regret when we built, but I actually don't. In our bid, our builder priced our house with HW everywhere downstairs, except the master bedroom. He included HW in the upstairs hall (which is actually a really big hall, it is hard to explain, but it wraps around the entry and the bedrooms up there are pretty far from each other.) Anyway, I was adamant that I wanted the entire 1st floor to be HW, but it would be $5000 to add HW to the master, so we changed the upstairs hall to carpet, to free up the $$ to put HW in the master. You can't see from downstairs that the upstairs is carpet (our stairs are HW,) but I really thought it would be sort of cheap looking to carpet up there. Actually...it has been so nice. It is really quiet up there. We have 2 children who have their friends over all the time, and I can't imagine how LOUD it would have been with HW. Plus...with HW you have the added expense of buying all those area rugs. So far, for us, we haven't minded the carpet upstairs. It isn't even on my list of things I'd like to ultimately change!

Laminate on stairs?

We put laminate on our stairs a few months ago and love it. You'll need to make sure Mohawk has stair nosing in the line you want to install. We used laminate from Berry throughout the house (beveled cherry planks in the Castle Rock line, and a fabulous slate called Tourraine). The cherry came with stair nosing, and the end look is absolutely gorgeous. Everyone who comes into our home always compliments us on our flooring. We're very pleased. Good luck!

You are all great!! I was happy with the China Doll but once I kept looking at the divine white it really grew on me. I just texted the painter and said I had changed my mind and will go with Divine White. ( I figured he probably hadn't bought it and even if he did, paint is not much $ it's the labor!!) . He texted back and said no problem. SO Divine White it is. And thank you for holding my hand through this and Justerrilyn for suggesting it. About the grout and tile- I selected it in 1989 and we moved in (new construction) in 1990. At the time, it was my dream tile. I selected dark gray grout and liked it all until about 5 years ago when it suddenly aged in my eyes. The dark gray was wonderful though because it never discolored:). I see the merit of lightening it but not so sure I will do it----as it is throughout the entry, kitchen, and laundry room. Not sure of square footage but it's up there with yours. I appreciate the suggestion but just not sure if we will go for it. It's an exciting time and a bit overwhelming so I appreciate all the comments and suggestions.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I too, prefer the square banisters but do like the simple iron rods. I was feeling unsure about going that route with our more traditional crown molding,ect. We checked underneath the carpet when we had our wood floors restrained about 5 years ago, and unfortunately we will need to install wood treads. That is why it has taken us some time to get around to the project. Luckily, while the floors are original to the house we did restrain them so I think we will be able to match the color. For the runner, since all of the bedrooms are carpeted and we will likely want to stay neutral in there, will that need to be the carpet on the stairs?

Yes, people do carpet the hallway. If you use a dark color that doesn't show a traffic path, it will look better. Scoop up a tablespoon of dirt from the yard, take it to the carpet store and choose something a bit darker than the yard dirt.
