Grapes fruit on the previous year's growth, so no wonder you aren't getting any fruit. He's cut it all off. Definitely keep yout FIL away from the grape. There are loads of web sites on pruning grapes. I'm not as technical as most of them, but I just remove most of branches, especially old ones, in the spring, and leave plenty of new, previous years branches which will be the ones producing fruit. I'm de-stemming my forth bowl, and then have to go and pick some more.

nice looking vine! I'm as clueless as you say you are about grapes, but, I know the old, fruiting canes don't re-fruit the following year. Heck if I know what the old canes look like, so, I just cut back a little of everything. This way, the new growth from last year will fruit. If you cut back the new growth from last year too much, nothing will fruit. If the canes are long enough from last year's growth, they will fruit. It might take another season for your young canes to bear fruit. Sorry if this is confusing. I just cut back a little every year and let it grow on and not worry too much. I'll let the "vintners" out in Calif. worry when they're making my wine. :-)

well, likely as not either the vines grew or they didn't by now. Yes, grapes can bud from the side of the bark where no bud is evident. If you pruned them late, then you should not remove more than 1/3 of the vine if you want grapes this year. Don't know where you're at, but if Black Rot is a problem, then I would switch varieties. Here in the East, seedless grapes are very hard to grow without a lot of spraying. Most sucess has been with varieties that originate in NY state.

Multiple trunks is fine and maybe better if freeze injury is common. Grapes are very forgiving of different pruning and training systems. As long as the best wood is left each yr for fruiting it doesn't make a lot of difference. Some varieties are better spur pruned than others. I've grown dozens of varieties cane pruned and all worked well. It's also easy to change training system in mid stream. Multiple trunks to single or single to multiple. Cane to spur or some of both on the same vine. It mostly all works. You can keep all six of the current canes as multiple trunks and that will work as well. Once you understand how to remove as much old wood as possible each spring while retaining the best fruiting wood you've got it made. Maybe you understand that already. Mainly I'm talking to the others that will read this.
