what kind of back splash with a busy granite
Comments (11)Chris - I had a similar problem. I started with my counter top, and everything else was designed around it. As you can see in the pictures, my counter top has lots of stuff going on. When it came time for the backsplash, I wanted something that looked good on its own, complimented the counter top and was not a distraction. I was drawn to stone, and travertine seemed to be what I liked best, but no travertine 4'' x 4'' tile I found clicked. I ended up using 12'' x 12'' filled and honed travertine tiles that were the perfect color, texture and movement, and I had my granite installer cut them to 4'' by 4'' tiles (if I wanted subways, that would have been easier to cut something like 4'' x 12'' tiles). This doubled the price of the tile, but travertine is a lot less expensive than some of the more exotic ceramic tiles I was looking at. And here is the tile (excuse the range glamour shot - I still don't have any really good backsplash glamour shots) Anyway, just something to consider. Comments (3)If you have trouble visualizing what you'd like but "know it when you see it", then at this stage you should probably just look at as many stainless / dark cherry kitchens as you can and see which countertops and flooring "grab" you. In my case I knew I wanted simple, natural cherry cabinets and stainless appliances and probably a wood floor, but that was it. Looking at lots of pictures helped me narrow things down, so now I can at least have intelligent conversations with kitchen designers. I'd suggest going over to houzz.com and entering "stainless steel dark cherry kitchen" into their search box and looking through some of the hundreds of results you get. It's a great source of ideas. After you see some you like, you can probably come up with more words to add to the search box to narrow things down. You can also go to google and enter "site:gardenweb.com dark cherry stainless" and you'll find lots of threads on this site too. I don't know of a way to limit it to threads with photos, unfortunately. Laura...See MoreHelp with back splash fo granite I don't like
Comments (20)How accurate are those photos for actual color? Would it serve better to draw out that squash gold or the gray? (Personally, I think there's more than enough of the pinky yellow.) Or introduce an accent that matches the wood? What feeling does the owner prefer: warm colors? cool colors? Are there other colors or patterns in the room that need to be considered? Formal or informal? Budget? DIY or pro install? Access to vendors? Personal preferences for materials? Has she taken the Sweeby test? Definitely avoid small mosaic glass tiles unless they're a trim band no more than 3 inches tall and positioned at least 10 inches above the counter and are a good match with the countertop. srg215's monocolor solution has a lot of wisdom to it, and the tile size is big enough to provide a larger, regular counterpoint (pun intended) to the countertop's irregular pattern. It defuses it, although his/her granite has fewer color tones than this one. Definitely recommend living with this for a while and perhaps trying out some colors and textures via paint, fabrics, kitchen objects, maybe wallpaper or stencil. Tile backsplashes are generally expensive enough and permanent enough to set this owner up with a second reason for dissatisfaction if she rushes into things....See MoreID! New Peperomia Obtusifolia cultivator? Unknown name? HELP!
Comments (18)I'm not, so thx GLarry; for my collecting purposes I don't really need to be. Mrs. B pls. note, the word is Cultivar, not cultivator. Pls try searching Peperomia obtusifolia variegata & then go to Images to compare the different variegation types & I'm not trying to be rude or sarcastic, here but when it comes to Searches, spelling counts.
