BeniKawa Japanese Maple / wind damage causing split & seperation

hello all, last Fall, a rogue very high wind storm here on Whidbey Island torr off a large branch off our beloved BeniKawa Japanese maple ....in an effort to save the break, I reattached it fast, see pics, with the assist of 2 stainless bolts and some plastic wire ties ...fast forward to now: the onber 2/3rd of the trees brinbgth winter red, the reattached part not ....also, the tips of the hwlthy side showing soring bud gowrth, the tips of the reattached part not .....the runk is maintaining the red coral bark color up to the Y of the split, bit it seems the reattach did not take .....could it have to be reatached for an entire Spring & Summer grow season before it takes ? or is the reattached part a goner ? ....here are pics I just took, all insight, help and/or fact appreciated, thank you

IMO, it does not look very promising for the reattached portion. But these trees can sometimes be surprisingly resilient. I'd wait to see what happens when the tree leafs out and make a decision then.

If the damage was done last Fall, that really hasn't been much time for much healing to occur.

But even given more time and things go well, you'll only have healing of the inner and outer bark layers, the heartwood itself won't heal, so you're looking at a few to several years before the wound is fully encapsulated with enough new layers to bind things together again.

It's hard to tell from the pictures provided but some of those branches look dead and will have to be removed.

If it were mine, I'd wait a while (a season?) and if new branches start growing out from the sides of the trunk below the break and the damaged fork doesn't show good progress overall and the top doesn't fill out good, I might cut the trunk below the wounded fork and let the tree start up again from any of the new, lower branches, if that happens.

summerdean: Native trees, especially those with wide spreading branches, low centers of gravity, strong deep root systems, and small leaf size hold up better in windy conditions (and tropical storms). This is especially true if they are growing in mixed groves of trees. Solitary trees have less wind resistance than massed trees. The cypress trees - bald cypress or pond cypress are the premier storm resistant trees. This is largely due to their deciduous nature, fine leaf pattern, tapered and balanced central leader, minimal branch pattern, broadly balanced root system. Dawn redwood falls into the same category. Favorites for their interesting trunks and soft green needles. You are interested in flowering trees - these are above average in wind resistance: Carolina Silverbell - Halesia tetraptera or H. carolina - lovely flowering tree Japanese Tree Lilac - Syringa reticulata Pagoda Dogwood - Cornus alternifolia - very nice shape and blooms Panicled Golden Raintree - Koelreuteria paniculata - dramatic show at least twice a year Sargent Cherry - Prunus sargentii Fringetree - Chionanthus virginicus - I love these trees - they take a beating and thrive where I live. Crape Myrtles Evergreens provide privacy from the road: Southern Magnolia - Magnolia grandiflora - as Spurce says, is incredibly tolerant of windy conditions Sweetbay Magnolia - Magnolia virginiana - smaller, fragrant flowers, partially evergreen species available Red Cedar - Juniperus virginiana American Holly - Ilex opaca - evergreen, good screen for road Larger trees with good wind resistance: American Hornbeam or Musclewood- Carpinus caroliniana Hophornbeam - Ostrya virginiana Wild Cherry - Prunus serotina Catalpa Trees - Catalpa speciosa River Birch - Betula nigra Black Gum - Nyssa sylvatica (personal favorite, outstanding fall color) Black Walnut - Juglans nigra Black Locust - Robinia pseudoacacia If you decide to plant a few shade trees or specimens: Shumard Oak - Quercus shumardii Nutall Oak - Q. nuttalli Cherrybark Oak - Q. falcata v. pagodafolia Swamp chestnut oak - Q. michauxii Live oak - Q. virginiana White oak - Q. alba Sycamore - Platanus occidentalis London Planetree - Platanus x acerifolia Winged Elm - Ulmus alata Since you are interested in flowering trees, you may want to consider 'shrubs' - many are larger than small trees and will give you more variety. will try for pix tomorrow --in meantime, just heavy snows, which we've had before. no temp records. tree was planted to overhang small pond that was installed before we bought house. pond was cemented in, but cement developed several cracks. had pond refitted last year, so that about 1/3 of root system is no longer getting water -- getting plenty of water from remaining 2/3. plenty of leaves on branches and twigs overhanging pond. other change in microclimate was large branch from overhanging tree fell last winter. red maple now getting more sun.

Excellent! That is very encouraging news about the japonicums and shirasawanums being good in the cold. I will reveal my ignorance though and ask you what "FWIW" means, haha. I am not exactly learned in internet lingo as you might have guessed. All of your guys' information has been extremely helpful though, and I am starting to feel much more optimistic about my chances of success. I ended up getting 10 Japanese Maples this year which is about 9 more than I expected I would, haha. But what can I say? The more I learned about them and the more I saw pictures, the more I felt like I needed to have this tree or that. I think I'll be getting more next year for sure and I already have my eye on some of the ones mentioned here. But since I am such a greenhorn I'm going to see how I can do with the ten I have before repeating any of my rookie mistakes. My deepest thanks to you all though for your help!

If they were mine I wouldn't touch them for a while maybe next late fall early winter ( the best time ti prune IMHO) at the earliest maybe not til two winters from now depending on how they look next fall...as long as the breaks are healing fine and not either unsightly or really ragged... but I would cage both with that dog around cause once they get a taste for stripping trees both will be at risk...You might also invest in some sort of good luck lawn ornamate ;>) ...that is REALLY bad luck to have your only two JM's right next to one another get virtually destoyed in seperate incidents ...the JM Gods are NOT shinning on you and you need some help !!! you will know by mid summer ... and then it will be a whole different batch of questions on how to deal with removing the dead part .. if in fact it is ...

imo... you should have just properly pruned off the damage.. when it happened... instead of drilling holes thru the good part to try to save the bad part ... i understand why you had to try to save it.. been there.. done that... but it usually doenst work out .... so next time.. just properly prune it.. and let the tree grow itself into a new form ...

and most importantly ... next time you buy a tree.. avoid all trees with that kind of bark-included V crotch.. they are inherently weak.. as you found out.. prevention stats at the point of sale ... books have been written on the topic ...

Upon second examination, I believe after the break, the fork on the right was being held to the tree by only a thin strip of bark. That fork (right side in pictures) also looks mostly dead and has been cut off higher once before.

My first effort would've been to snip that fork off completely and let the healthy side of the tree encapsulate the wound and possibly setting new branches in that area.

Now, hole or no hole, the left side, if left by itself, would have to be splinted and/or staked for a time, to prevent further damage.
