Please help me choose interior doors: some solid/some hollow?
Comments (13)I don't know that you can get a real looking Shaker hollow door because the flat recessed panel area would have to be very thin in cross section. In my experience the raised panel portion of a hollow door is much thicker than the raised panel on a solid wood door, almost as thick as the stiles and rails themselves in cross section. Stylistically I don't think a 6 raised panel will work well on closets with the Shaker on the room doors. In a hierarchical sense, the Room door is the Primary door and should be fancier or more detailed than closet doors if they are not all going to match. I see nothing wrong, if you are not matching doors, with using a Shaker door on the room door and using plain slab doors in a paint grade with a good paint job on them for the closets, so that the closets take a stylistic back seat to the room doors. As for hollow vs. solid. I am strongly biased toward solid even for pocket doors. It is the hanging hardware and the workmanship of the hang that dictates their proper function, not the weight of the doors. The houses in my neighborhood have pocket doors that are 10 feet tall and four feet wide that are Very heavy. But you have to get good hardware, have a good carpenter do the install, and *make *sure * the *finish *carpenters *don't *nail *the *baseboards* and *door *casings *through the *drywall *and *into *the *pocket *doors *themselves*. It Happens. A Lot....See MoreHelp me add some polish to my guest room - all ideas welcome
Comments (59)Thanks for the feedback on the curtains. It sure is easier for me to do....nothing! Of course my dog has already managed to get tangled up in one and pull the entire thing (including rod) off the wall. And in less than 48 hours since hanging too! Thats gotta be some sort of record. Hopefully that doesn't happen again. Geokid, I wanted it your way too, and when we moved in tried to get it set up this way. I was vetoed and since I got to pick placement of every other room, I didn't argue too much. I can't recall the problem....maybe the dresser didn't fit on that wall? Some weird feng shui thing? nosoccormom - that light will likely be replaced with the oh so functional but not always attractive ceiling fan when we get around to it. It's close to a 100 year old house. It's been remodeled/rehabbed but not quite sure of how well it was insulated and how HOT it will get up there. We have lots of pretty windows, but they probably won't help much. Thoughts on a chair? It will obviously have to be small. I would love a pop of color over in that corner (I like color) but am not confident that I will find one that matches the rug. So how would another color like coral look? Too much?...See MoreCan you please help me? what to add instead of the bench?
Comments (11)Thank you all for your amazing suggestions!!!! Love them all!!! I'm sorry for so much confusion with this space and for my limited time to respond at this moment! The glass table and most of the plants are presents, so I'm aware of the crazy space I created, wanting to keep all... :( The purpose for the glass table was to have an area to maybe have some drinks and listen to the piano.. below is the area showing the piano.. hoping this gives you a better idea of the space. The bench is a recent acquisition (but I may return it).. just because I thought something was missing in front of that glass table, places to sit... then I thought about adding a cowhide rug underneath.. but I love all your kind suggestions, rearranging the furniture around the fireplace.. I do not have much space to the right.. because it is sort of a walking space where people enters from the garage..also, on the left the entrance door is kind of wide.. I'm attaching some more pics after I semi-rearranged the furniture following some of decoratingdilemma's suggestions (I do not have a place to put those two heavy chairs, for now..).. and of course missing some of the other suggestions since I just came for lunch and have limited time. The last picture shows the table moved however the bench looked kind of too small against the wall.. or what do you think? Thank you all!!!...See MoreHelp me add some curb appeal to my cute little home!
Comments (22)Following up on Addie's idea, if you want to designate an area for the pool and incorporate it into your landscape, why not? Then in spring and fall it could be your campfire area, and in winter you could put holiday decorations there. But my first item on the priority list would be a privacy fence. Frankly your house looks fine/wonderful to me but if you have no back yard and are wanting to get the most use out of your front yard with kids, etc. then start with a GOOD fence. It is not inexpensive. Then just prune a bit or refresh what you have. And for what it's worth, I think the tree looks like it is hugging your house, in a good way! Plus if I was a kid I would be up that tree in a New York minute. :) You don't need to do it all at once! And you can get a lot of plants and other things bit by bit as they come on sale or even for free from friends or neighbors who are cleaning up. Do the big important thing (fence) with a lot of planning and don't skimp on the money and the rest will come from your enjoyment of your private space as time and cash allows....See Moreshirlpp
