I started spinach in my 12 by 18 high tunnel. 3 beds of 6 rows. I put it in thick, if some doesn't come up oh well, if it all comes up, Where's Popeye! I also seeded an experiment. I planted leaf lettuce and spinach in half 55 gallon plastic barrels. If they grow well, I plan on pulling them out of the building late this fall and bring them in the house and put in a sunny south facing room and try to grow spinach and lettuce in the winter. If it doesn't grow, oh well. I already paid for the seed with what I have already ate from earlier plantings. If the experiment works well, I may try to grow more in these half barrels. I put them on 2 by 4 legs and they are at a nice height to work at. I also have NO WEEDS!

When does everyone start fall tomato seeds? I'm going to sow some peppers, eggplants and basil, plus a few flowers. Just wondering if I should do the tomatoes or wait on them? Had a salad yesterday with lettuce, radishes, jalepenos and fresh dill, all from the garden I think the lettuce is nearly done but still not bitter or bolting! Maybe from the cooler nights and partial shade? My Japenese eggplant has over twenty fruits, some almost ready to pick. The bigger eggplant (don't know the variety) has lots of tiny fruits but they take longer to mature. TomToes planted in Feb are loaded down with fruit Marglobe and purple Russian) but the ones that were planted late are just now blossoming. Hopefully, they'll have time to set before we get hit by heat. Basil is the best I've ever grown. Chard is a monster, can't figure out what to do with it all. I'm planting okra, melons, watermelon, kabocha squash, and a zucchini this weekend. Will move my red ripper peas from their not so good spot to the new garden and build a trellis next week. Is it too late do you think, for a few Christmas Limas? Most of mine were eaten by pill worms.

tom, you growing those onions and radishes in containers or in the ground? Onions for sure go in the ground, they take up too much real estate to put in containers so they'll go in the raised boxes they were in last year, between the bananas. The radishes will probably go on the edge of the onion boxes just like last year so I can grow the lettuces in my window box planters on the upper deck. I'd like to plant onion bulbs but have not seen them anywhere. Any idea where to find them? You should start seeing onion sets (60) at the Big Box stores any time now.... Tom, did you say this is a good time to plant zucchinis? And do they climb or trail? Yes, you can grow them now. The bush types trail. We've been experimenting with the English vining marrows since last fall, hard to find seeds but Silvia did well this past year and has been able to share seeds with those who have ask for them. Since it went so well with the Table Dainty, and we can no longer get seed from England, I though I'd better get some of the Trailing Green Marrow in case the source for it dried up. I have enough seeds of it right now to send anyone who wants to try it six seeds each. These are vining squash, just as Silvia's picture shows.... I'll post pictures later if my humidity and morning dew don't do these plants in with DM/PM. I currently have three of each started on my veggie arbor. hey, i rather liked the cuccuzi!
