Tint or no tint? What colors of tint are best?

We need more context. Is this an existing home or a new build? Where is it located? If a new build, can you show us the elevations? if it's a remodel, upload some pictures of the exterior.

This is a new build in Springfield, MO. It is high with a steep front yard. I don't have pictures. Living room and master roofs slope up 20' high--all windows. Colors are white stack stone, grey metal siding, Charcoal metal roofs. Builder wants BLUE windows. I'm afraid home will look commercial.

My husband and I are very much "do-it-yourselfers" but when we had our 4 large floor to ceiling windows and sliding door tinted we elected to have a pro do them. In order to get a smooth finish, that lined up correctly with the glass without bubbles or wrinkles it was worth having someone install the film. I think it cost around 300$ (maybe less) for someone to install it. We used a three M product, and it has cut down the heat into the room considerably. We used a medium tint and yes the room became somewhat less bright but not at all dark. It has been a year and our eyes have adjusted to it and we think it was to blindingly bright before the window tinting. I would imagine the tinting will last a good long time unless my cat severely scratches it (in fact, the film was placed and integrated on the window so well that I can not see an area that I could even begin to remove it off the window).

I have 30 year old aluminum windows. They have held up well except I have replaced the glass on some of them. I also painted the exteriors but I'm not sure if I could have cleaned them instead (rust marks from screws). I considered replacing the whole windows instead of just the glass. Most alternative windows would have been deeper. I would have lost half my window sill in some cases. This would have limited my options for recessed window coverings. I did not like the look of the vinyl, composite, or cheaper marvin fiberglass windows I saw. Aluminum loses heat but retains strength. I read somewhere that vinyl does not last as long. I would have chosen aluminum clad wood windows except they were 4.5" deep and I did not want to lose 2.5" of my window sill. So I am keeping the 2" deep aluminum windows and cladding the interior drywall with painted wood trim to make it feel more "craftsman".

There are things I like about your plan. But.........will there be kids or teens in the 2nd and third bedrooms? I would find a way to move closets so there is more buffer between the master wall and bedroom so you don't hear as much from each other'r rooms. Also, the "media" room will be unusable when anyone is trying to sleep with all of the bedroom doors opening off of it. If the first bedroom was made the media room, and the current media room was made a bedroom with a bath between it and the master, and a hall........the media room would have much more sound isolation. It could be configured as a room that closes and could be a bedroom if ever needed. As is, the media room is a big hallway, with the sound problem to the bedrooms. I love your home exterior! I agree windows do not have to match, unless they are next to each other and visible at the same time. Ignore my comments if the current layout works for you!

My house has similar features. One curved window wall / quarter circle with a 13ft radius, 22ft high and one curved window wall, 1/3rd circle, 8 ft radius, 22ft high. Walls are 12” thick concrete, steel beam roof structure. I couldn’t find a residential builder that will do this and commercial builders aren’t interested (I guess maybe if you have Sophie’s budget). I got this engineered by a firm and go the DIY installation route (glass spider fittings on laminated glass columns, aluminum frame commection to concrete) after having the glass fabricated by a glass fabricator who I worked with in the past. That’s the only feasible method for me. Cost is approx. $20k material for the larger wall. Plus crane rental, lots of work and I assume all risk. Probably $40k ish for both window walls plus crane.

you aren't giving much info. so many diff kinds of tinting.

why not see what's available in person, or on homes, and see if you like it. go visit some of the completed homes by this builder to see what it looks like

If you have a lot of glass on the south side of the house you will really wish it were tinted. But since there are so many different ways to do it you need to do more research.

I do not like tinted windows so in a caselike yours I use motorized solar shades and I have huge overhangs on the S. side where I have about 80% glass The shdes work really well to control heat and UV rays but let me have the view .
