Stand up shower half wall trim solution?

My wife and I are about 1 month away from completing our first custom build (fingers crossed).

We have a stand up shower with a half wall and frameless glass in one of our guest bathrooms. Our builder installed this trim which we do not like. It is trim used in other areas of the house for our wainscotting. We think it looks awkward and does not line up with the baseboard well. Our builder told us this is the best solution he had and what they "normally do". Obviously, they still need to paint it...

Are there more elegant solutions to this, apart from running the tile on both sides of the pony wall? I was under the impression they would just be able to have the drywall run up to the tile, but I was told that is apparently not possible, as there is some type of metal mesh material in the way that needs to be covered. Help!

This is the best "before" shot that I can find.
