Flooring Design Dilemma

White oak floors - Bona Traffic HD

We are having white oak floors installed and the floor installer has use 3 coats of Bona Traffic HD. They said that the buffer has a screen that seals on every buffing.

My question is should they have used something like Bona NaturalSeal before applying the Bona Traffic HD three times or is it fine to just apply the Bona Traffic HD because the buffer has a screen that seals on every buffing?

I've read on the Bona website Traffic HD cures in 3 days, but have read elsewhere that one should not put carpets or furniture for 2 weeks? What is right?

- You do not need a sealer under Traffic HD, although it is recommended to avoid side bonding, panelization and tannin pull.
- You do not need it, if, it is the look you want to achieve.
- You do not need it, if, installer can apply it perfectly without any tannin pull (dark spots).
- You do not need it, if, your move-in date is flexible.
- You do not need it, if, you have time to redo the project.
Traffic HD is 90 % cured after 72 hours and will need a full week to be 100% cured. Flooring coverings should wait until the finish is fully cured. Move-in after 48 hours is fine as long as movers carry and not drag furnitures.

I just wanted to post a status - I spoke to Bona customer service, and they said that for their Traffic line, the semigloss is similar to satin in other manufacturer's finish, whereas the satin is similar to matte in other manufacturer's finish. He couldn't say for certain the difference in HD vs gular Traffic since it might depend on the wood species, but he said it shouldn't be that different.

I've used Naturale twice and neither customer liked it and went to Traffic. With a very low gloss option in Traffic it seems kind of redundant but maybe I'm just not that discerning. I have some on a floor in my showroom and it's held up well but seems to have gotten shinier over time. What color are they doing for stain?

I love your floors! Thank you for posting. My hardwoods are being sealed and finished as I type this with Bona Intense Seal. You are so right, it is very hard to find images of white oak with Intense seal. I think it is a timeless choice for sure! :) UPDATE - just saw my 4” rift and quarter sawn white oak woth Bona Intense Seal still drying, here are the pics… looks darker in pictures than in person, FYI - LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!

Sorry, just saw this. I feel two coats of finish is sufficient when applied over sealer at the prescribed rate. This is especially true for Traffic which goes on heavier (350-400 sq. ft/gallon for Traffic, 500-600 for Mega). More coats of finish make the floor smoother, filling in the grain, and making wear and scratches more evident. If you're in a situation where you need more longevity, you can have more coats applied and live with the consequences. In most residential situations my customers want their floor recoated when it looks bad due to wear and scratches, not when the finish wears through. The surface accumulates the same amount of wear and scratches whether it has 2 coats or 20 coats, at which point it will look a bit shabby and require a recoat.

If you use non skid pads under anything, be careful with pads that contain latex/PVC/etc. We used a couple under small area rugs (luckily adjacent to wall), and they interacted with the finish to leave a grid mark. These non skid pads typically look like "grids" (almost screen-like) vs. felt pads. This was weeks after floors were finished.
