Fireplace makeover ideas

My parents would like to makeover their fireplace. They would like to remove the rock and add a fireplace insert. They will also be replacing their carpet and furniture. Would like some ideas to share. Thank you.

A picture of the entire room would help. What style furniture are they considering? Look for pictures of rooms they like.

It would be nice to see the entire wall, but this is what I would do: get rid of the stone and the hearth. Drop the new firebox to the floor and to some built ins to either side....maybe get the TV over the fireplace (easier if the box is dropped to the floor). Something along these lines:

Theirs would be a little different of course since you don't have windows there and it's not certain how far back the firebox could be pushed, but you get the idea. Nice and bright...same color as the other trim in the going on perhaps.

Your sofa fabric and two chairs add quite an exotic African or jungle safari vibe to the space. I would play off that unless you plan to replace the furniture. The tile could get too busy for what you have now. I would keep things simple but artistic to maintain that vibe.

I am currently working on a kitchen remodel and next to my kitchen is the living room with a fireplace all the way to ceiling. We are thinking of ideas to redo the fireplace. One idea is to cover the fireplace with drywall and make two big rectangular holes (one for electric fireplace, one for hanging the TV, something like this). However, we are worried that: (1) electric fireplace may look cheap. (2) losing the fireplace appeal. Another idea is to hang the TV on the other Wall as labelled in the photo and keep the fireplace as is. Maybe get an insert fireplace to put in there (but might be difficult due to rough edges of the stone fireplace). Any suggestions?

(you need a diff mantle!) or, you could just paint the brick. (paint w/any type of paint. just depends on the look you want) BTW, Your lighting looks really yellow. can you upgrade your bulbs a bit? What do you think about painting your walls white and the brick a matte black? this color is BM Iron Mountain: You see the diff in the lighting in this pic below and the photoshop one above? This lighting is a neutral white. the one you have gives everything a yellowish/pink hue. try using a 3500-4000K bulb. at night, the 2500K is fine if you want a dimmer look. Here's one w/the brick painted white. Get rid of that mantle you have and go find a wood beam another white brick but you could top your hearth w/a stone remnant or stone tiles. (like Basalt) If you plan on replacing those tiny baseboards, it would update the look of the room if you did a 5" , plain baseboard see the size on these baseboards? like that. Do you like the look of this corner fireplace? They did a heavy lime/mortar wash on it. A hearth may be required (depends on local code and type of insert), but a full wall of stone is not, so they should be able to do something simpler with the space -- however, if they do, they will probably need new flooring in the room, so that's something to take into account.

I wouldn't aim for the TV over the fireplace, but a smaller surround will probably mean that the TV can move closer, making it easier to arrange furniture to enjoy both. And have art hanging over the firebox too!

Honestly, once the stone comes down, the world is your oyster, so you just need to look at some photos and get a sense of what appeals and fits with the character of the house and your parents' stylistic preferences.

I love my stone FP in my MCM home it is huge 10'x8'x4' the back of the FP forms the wall behind my stove ans some stainless cabinets that can be moved so I can clean the stone .I love wood burning FPs but they could easily do an isetrt into that FP.IMO painted stone is just plain ugly . Our FP is so large it actually is part of the hpuse construction with a huge caoncrete base in the basement . Your parents might want to check out what is possible .
