Ahhh...I can breathe again. :-)
Comments (11)Brenda, I had to laugh at the mental picture of you hauling out all the boxes and bins with a bright smile and 'hey, here's a fun project!'. Maybe that would send everyone scurrying. If not, you could always put everything away, then sit down and just give them a blank stare as in, hmmm there is something else in the house that needs to go now...:). I didn't end up finishing the tree de-decorating last night after all. Got all the ornaments down but as my husband had been through a bit of medical testing that left him woozy (he's fine) I couldn't really press him to get the tree out right away. But I did make him do it this morning; it was such a sad sight to see that poor browning tree, denuded of all the sparkling ornaments, just sitting there. So I've got the house back in order, though not sparkling clean like Jamie. More semi-clean, but at least not decorated anymore. I have all my bins relabeled, and stacked in the back hallway to be put back in the loft. Do need to put away all the wrap, bags and ribbon I got the 26th. While I"m here, anyone have suggestions for storing ribbon? At Linens n Things I came across a rather neat ribbon storage box with a dowel inside and a small separate attached box for tape and scissors. But, not only was it rather small it wasn't on sale! That really surprised me but on principle I was not going to pay a whopping $7.99 when I always buy at 50% off the day after Xmas. Well, not unless Talley Sue tells me I should...should I go back and just pay that? Any online sources? Container store? I love them but the prices there are often so high. But now I keep thinking of that neat ribbon storage box and I want one! Ann...See MoreMy fireplace mantle needs your help. Picture
Comments (12)I'm loving all your ideas. Keep them coming! Eventually we could add a cap to the fireplace mantle (we have to finish our upstairs bathroom and library first). LOL! My chorus. Yes, it *is*. I hate the fake plants too and I just took them off. Copper trays and pottery. I'll go digging. Les, the sign used to travel back and forth between my BIL and us. Every time he needed money, he'd let us have the sign until he paid us back. Last time (many years ago) he decided he just wanted us to keep it. Well, there are two signs. One is in our bedroom and it's really nice too. The fireplace had a mirror when we moved here but we took it down. It's upstairs in a large closet now. Maybe that was a mistake. LOL! Maybe I should drop the sign down closer to the fireplace? Our ceilings are high, I think 11' but the fireplace is huge. So is the sign. Making the sign a theme for the fireplace? Interesting idea. As far as moving the sign, the problem is there are no other walls big enough and my DH loves it. Maybe when the wallpaper is gone, it may fit better. If I did a box in the center, it would have to be a pretty big box or it will disappear, don't you think? (Think 8' wide. That is what the mantle measures.) I just left my post to fix my mantle and now my entire living room is destroyed. My mantle looks no better yet but the fake plants are gone. LOL! I'm moving around stuff....See MoreFireplace mantle decor
Comments (11)If it is cast stone you can stain it but I've seen some examples on youtube and most of them don't look great. It can look really streaky. The other thing you could do is add more light stones to the chimney so it ties in better with the mantle. This will sound weird but stick with me for a minute. Get some parchment colored pieces of paper and cut a bunch the same the size as your individual stones. Randomly tape some on the stone. Then you can see if adding some more white to the chimney part makes the mantle and chimney look more cohesive. If you like the look, just paint some of the bricks the same color as the mantle. I would also consider pulling the whole mantle off as mentioned above. It may be easier than you think....See MoreFireplace mantle decor
Comments (12)I would move the "window" mirrors? to over the fireplace, and get something more vertical going on with the side bookcases, if you have 4 of those botanical prints, you could do 2 on each side in a vertical arrangement. or like in the sample picture, branches in a vase. I would also get rid of those shelves above the couch and do a large picture or gallery wall there. I also think if you want/ need the blue chair, you need some more blue in the pillows or get a rug that incorporates it, it does not seem to mesh with the rest of the room. Or getting rid of it and putting in an indoor tree or plant on a stand in that space. I would also suggest clustering the birdcages together, or moving the one on the coffee table elsewhere, the table seems a bit small for all of the objects on it. I think your space is lovely and you have a lot of great pieces to work with....See MoreShadyWillowFarm
