Define 'food from the earth'.

If meat is included then it would be in the thousands. Beef alone requires over 1800 gallons per pound (1800 gallons x 8.3 pounds per gallon = 14,940 lbs. of water per pound of meat.). Of course, most of that total is needed to produce the food that they eat.

35 gallons for one pound of potatoes=290 pounds of water

299 gallons for one pound of rice=2481 pounds of water

6 ounces for one gin and tonic= less than a pound of water
