Comments (29)"The teachers I heard complaining in various venues were not special ed teachers. The tone of voice was bitter, there was much eye-rolling, and there was the suspicion of parents manipulating the system." I saw a lot of that when I sought help for my older son, who was gifted in addition to struggling with dyslexia and ADHD. There was a widespread perception that I just wanted special treatment for him, when all I really wanted was for the school to help him learn to read! (Why was I the only one who thought having a GT kid in the lowest reading group signaled a possible LD?) Meh. They wouldn't do a thing for him... Never did. I also see some evidence of bitterness / resentment in the regular ed. teachers when they are forced to include my younger son, who has clear disabilities and some degree of cognitive impairment. But I have to see their side of it -- they've got 30 kids to teach and mine takes a lot of extra effort for a smaller reward... Most of his classes are 'co-teach', meaning there are two teachers, one of whom is a dedicated Special Ed. teacher who modifies the content for the Sp. Ed. kids. But where it's a one-teacher class, my kid suffers, and the teacher does too. No easy answers to that one, though......See MoreChiropractic Feels Like. Scam??
Comments (30)Martinca; who else in your family has joint pain? What I pasted in below is the 1st sign that this will probably be life long. I'm not sure they will get a good handle on it. Hyper-mobility of the joints is called EDS- Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a heterogeneous group of heritable connective tissue disorders, characterized by articular (joint) hypermobility, skin extensibility and tissue fragility. Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a group of inherited disorders that affect connective tissue. Take a look at the link below; it opens the direct PDF location; you can either open or save it. Back around May; I made a post about Chiari Malformation for a friend. One of the gals here mentioned that she has EDS & little did I know that this would smack me in the face in another 6 weeks after my post. I had no clue what EDS even was; but I'm learning a lot & it's why I haven't been around much the last few months. My daughter has been majorly suffering for 3 years; guess what? Her mystery diagnosis will most likely be EDS. We saw the 1st neuro yesterday; have to find a geneticist probably endocrinologist & rheumatologist. People can live with varying degrees of EDS; some may never know they have it while others are wrongly diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Still others will be fine until like your grand daughter; injure themselves & do not heal right. There is no "test" to confirm EDS; from what I understand it goes off of symptoms which are many. How are her teeth? Please be careful with braces; from what I'm reading they actually weaken teeth- which fits in with my daughter & how her teeth are breaking at the gum. Another issue is she may not be able to be put down for surgeries. My daughter had a molar pulled a few weeks ago; they couldn't get the IV meds to knock her out. Back to her ankle; from what I do understand; the right physical therapist; possibly chiro may be able to work with her to strengthen it. I dislike the word cured because from what I'm reading with others diagnosed; she's going to have to keep working at it but with the correctly trained people. Send me an email; I'll get you set up at a decent facebook group. Inspire also has an EDS board. she is 13. She's had X-rays and MRI . We 've been told she has hyper- mobility of the ankle caused by weak ligaments , and perhaps exacerbated by an injury( sprain). Two months of pt and home exercises only caused more pain and no improvement. Comments (47)Labmomma- Did I say anything about court? :-) Let me tell you the nutshell version of a story of how the dog whisper helped probably save our furry little behinds. I told this story on another forum and all the cesar-haters came out and told me how stupid i was so you're getting the short version. After watching the show, I decided I would make more of an effort to keep the dogs to my side instead of in front of me while on walks. I wouldn't say they had a pulling problem but the one would pee on everything in sight and the pup was starting to learn how that looked like fun so I felt like it was time to see if I can walk the dogs how cesar does on tv. And no I didn't contact a professional before using the technique like it says in the disclaimer! I thought I'd take a chance. Well after some time walks became a lot more enjoyable and didn't need someone to reinsert my arm into it's socket if a squirrel ran by and there's no more pee-mail. So there's something to be said for more structured walks and not letting the dogs go first. That's only half of it. Ok so we're on a sidewalk where some rednecks keep their pitbull looking dogs out in their yard and never walk them or probably do anything remotely responsible so the dogs had tunnneled under the fence. I didn't know this until a mean looking growling and barking dog ambushes us. My first instinct: soil trousers. My second instinct: must get out of here.* â note there is a "*" Normally these dogs of mine are very friendly, they think every person and dog is their friend and wants to give them cookies. They are personalities that people would kill for in a dog. The mean dog is circling us and I was trying to act like i didn't notice and wanted the boys to play along like we were all wearing iron clad armour. They stayed with the program, focusing on me and where we were going, not jerking me away to go mess with the mean dog. We managed to evade persuit, not getting bitten. I credit the dog whisper show for making me aware that perfecting the walk was possible and it paid off big. Now for that * I was talking about. On a recent episode Cesar talked about what do do in a situation where if you are face to face with a mad dog, you don't turn around and run away. He didn't give instructions on what to do, it was the post office seminar episode, but whatever we're still alive and the dogs did not engage thank god. He also says to be calm and assertive and not show fear. I would be very surprsied if I was not showing or smelling like fear but I'm sure I probably was pretty calm and assertive....See MoreSmall kitchen/question about counter material
Comments (51)Wow, what a surprise to see this thread at the top of the page. Very bittersweet, because my last post mentions my husband's plans for the tops. He unexpectedly passed away just a couple of months later--how I wish he was still here. My brother graciously volunteered to help me with the tops. He cut them after I templated, then I finished the sanding, buffing, installation, runnels and seams. Coincidentally, I just finished cleaning the tops in anticipation of a family celebration planned for this Sunday. I polish with a cloth saturated with mineral oil, then buff off the excess. Makes them shine like new! They are holding up well--I don't notice any damage or wear, and I sometimes put (semi-)hot pots down beside the stove, although I wouldn't put a large, really hot baking dish from the oven. One casualty though--my DD dropped the lid to a china tea pot. The lid shattered, but no damage to the counter. I'm linking my kitchen album, starting with the pics of the counter top, and also the album that has info on the runnels. If you click on my user-name you can find all my albums, as well as my kitchen threads. houstoncrafter, best of luck!! I haven't been on GW much lately, as I've had some other projects to do, but feel free to email me if you need some hand-holding. :) Kitchen/lab top pics DIY Runnels...See Morebbstx
