Help Needed: Recessed lighting choice, Halo vs. Juno

Hi All,

I am installing recessed lights in a workspace where good lighting is needed. The ceiling is 12' high, and while there will be task lighting as well, this will be the source of general light.

I went to a local lighting supplier who carries JUNO and they recommended a JUNO E series retrofit recessed light 65BE/65SE SWW5. E Series LED Downlight Retrofit 5''/6'' ...

I told my electrician that this was my choice, and he suggested a HALO 1200 series 5"/6"recessed retrofit light, which he said "is the same thing" .

I compared the specs online, and I don't really see any difference ... both have adjustable color (2700K - 5000K), both are 90 CRI, both dimmable, both LED, both have white trim and baffle ... but I don't know what else to look for and want to make sure that the Electrician's suggestion is indeed comparable.

Is there any material difference in terms of quality or function? Any suggestions appreciated

Ive used and installed both. theyre very similar and i personally would not care which i went with.

Liton has a reputation of being one of the better of the "offshore" brands. Halo is owned by Cooper Industries and used to have "made in USA by union workers" on each box but responded to our desire for cheaper by moving some production and the jobs overseas. Some of the offshore companies got here by lying and cheating with poor qualily cheap products. I tried Liton low voltage once a decade ago and had awful humming problems in some fixtures.

For some reason I was thinking that all Halogen lights are low voltage and require a transformer " Just watch out for vibration with halogen lights. The line voltage bulbs have less rugged filaments than lower voltage and are very unlikely to achieve rated life with even the smallest vibration. Puck type line voltage halogens are especially bad, but even PAR line voltage halogens are vulnerable. The higher operating temperature (compered to conventional incandescent bulbs) and line voltage operation prevent the filaments form being wound for vibration strength. This is why auto bulbs are 12 V. The filaments can be wound in stronger shapes than a higher voltage filament could endure.

Thanks to rjr220 and akchicago for the info/links to other sites to order Juno lighting. rjr220-I sent an e-mail off to galesburgelectric.com requesting availability and pricing info so will wait to see response. Thanks for responding! akchicago-the prices are great at electricsuppliesonline.com. The 2 trim models-206 and 207-cheaper there than laner.com and they also carry the 216. This is the one we want so we could put a 75 watt bulb in there if we wanted plus no need to order the air loc gasket. However, the IC20R housing is more expensive there than laner. Doing the math we still end up saving money with electricsuppliesonline AND we can get the 216 trim for a 75 watt max. bulb. Thanks so much for the info!! Didn't know you could order directly from the Juno site?? When I hit the How to Buy the site brought me to the US map and hitting NY state brought me to area distributors which were way more $$ for the housing/cans and trim than the web sites I've been looking at. If I'm missing something, let me know.

Lighting is one of this week's rotating renovation obsessions, so I understand your dilemma. I made an appointment with a lighting designer at a good sized local lighting store last week ($75 for an hour, which I think was money well spent), so that might be an option for you if you live in a place where that's available, as I found it really helpful. Soft, incandescent-like dimming is a goal for me too, and I know that most LEDs just get dimmer rather than also getting warmer like good old "real" bulbs. Satco, however, makes warm dimming bulbs, and Juno has warm dimming housings. I haven't actually seen either of them, so I can't comment on how they look, and there may be others out there too, but that's an option you might want to throw into the mix (even though we're supposed to be clarifying things, not making them more complicated!) Let us know what you decide and how you like it. I keep wishing there were ONE easy area, but I haven't found it so far.

The Juno 5CCT trim fits in a recessed housing such as the Juno IC23R LEDT24. Is there a reason that you are using this rather than a canless product such as the Halo RL6 or LT6?

The Halo SLD (aka 1200) is surface-mount, not recessed like the Juno 5CCT.

No, they look just about idential. i personally like the RAB wafer leds best. the light is slightly recessed. nothing better about them, its just what i usually go for.

@wdccruise and dave ... I'm a bit confused ...

My electrician recommended the Halo RL560 which he maintains is pretty much equivalent to the juno system.

@wdccruise, unless I misunderstand, you say the halo light is a canless surface mounted light, compared to the juno system, which is recessed.

Dave, you have introduced a new idea of a wafer Led.

To be honest, it's pretty confusing!

I guess what I'm really asking is this: how does one pick the right LED recessed (or surface mounted, or wafer configuration) light for the setting? I'm looking for LED's that will give off good light in the space, have good light spread and strength(wattage), dimmable, with the color temperature I want. Aesthetically, it just needs to blend into the ceiling and not cause glare when you look at them.

Which light does that best? is it just a matter of personal preference based on look/ease of installation/cost?

My apologies, i didnt check the part numbers and just figured.

Do you already have cans and you're looking to replace with led?

If not, and the drywall is up, the wafers are a great option.

All: I have attached a photo below of the current state of the ceiling. hopefully this clarifies my original qustion of whether Juno(lighting store suggestion) vs halo(electrician suggestion recessed is preferable, and whether there is a meaningful difference between them?

Can one screw an ordinary light bulb into that socket?

I am unclear on the various specs you have given. I am guessing you are using Halo RL56, 1200 series (meaning 1200lumen - max 1272@5000K). So RL56129S1EWH - a 5"/6" retrofit baffled LED, color selectable, 90CRI.

This is for an art studio? And you will have track lighting too directed at your work spaces? I can't scale the distance in the pic, but 1200lumens out of a 4" is very "bright."

As far as Juno vs Halo, no qualms about either. Halo is the industry stalworth (Cooper Lighting), and Juno is part of a large lighting-focused entity. Both lines are excellent.

@wdccruise ... I don't know how to answer your question. Photo shows the rough opening for the cans/baffle/trim/LED unit, ... I don't know what kind of wiring is behind that, and I don't know how deep the housing is (it's 12' up and i can't get up there to measure. Guessing at least 4"?

@3onthetree ... Yes, for an art studio. Sorry about the HALO specs, that was the nomenclature I was given by the electrician. Regarding light plan for the space, maybe it's too bright but it's what I was advised. Windows/daylight for daytime light, supplemented by task lighting (tracks, desk lamp, etc.) as needed. At night, will rely on recessed highhats, supplemented by task lighting -- if too bright, can be dimmed.

In any case, from the feedback here, it sounds like Halo is equivalent to Juno and both excellent brands, I am probably splitting hairs and obsessing for no reason!

Ah, makes sense. And the RL56 is available in many versions including those with 900 and 600 lumens, and a variety of trim finishes. Spec Sheet.

Be sure to use a dimmer. Recommended: Lutron LED+ dimmers.
