Design Dilemma Home Decorating

need decor ideas for my home mini bar!

Hey everybody. The picture attached is my home bar. The only difference is I turned the bar so the bar stools now face the brewery sign when you are sitting down. I am looking to get rid of the posters and the brewery sign and redo this corner, which is the corner of my living room in my co-op. The co-op has a very open feel to the point this little corner feels like it’s own space for the most part. I’d love to give it a prohibition/speak easy vibe somehow but I’m open to all ideas. Any suggestions?

I'm not understanding the scale of the photo. Those barstools don't look bar height and I don't see how they are practical. I would use the bar for mixing drinks but get a cafe table in front of it for the stools.

I think you need to replace the wall art with a large vertical poster on each wall in the corner to create a space that feels like a room within a room. Use a moody art or photo style to evoke the feeling you want.

@tracefloyd the stools spin so you can raise the height. I should have taken a more recent pic, we don’t even use those stools anymore we have a new set that matches Bette’s

Congrats on the new home! My husband and I also purchased our first house recently (been in it about six months) and we're in a similar boat (though with our ratty college furniture instead of hand-me-downs), embarking on an adventure to cohesively decorate the place. While I do have good sense of how to decorate and am not worried about going about it, it would have been really difficult even for me to decorate immediately, so I'm not concerning myself with it (we also have a bunch of house projects in the way). Basically, a good strategy is to take your sweet time and not worry about stuff not matching/ suiting your tastes or the walls not being quite the right color right now. Hone your vision and slowly collect pieces that adhere to it, adding to your spacing or swapping something out. Also, simply live in your space for a while. Be by yourselves, have a friend over, have lots of friends over, host a fancy dinner party and also a casual barbecue. Observe how you and your friends interact with and move around in the space - this will handily inform what kind of seating you might need and how you want to arrange things. I'm always taking mental notes when people are over lol.

I’d put the lemon tree or topiary to the right of your range area, just to balance out the tall glass cabinet on the left. I’ve done the same in my own kitchen - put a tallish topiary to the left near the window, to balance out the tall glass cabinet to the far right. Also the wood trim on the bottom of your vent cover is making it feel unbalanced with the black and white drapery. I would put some decorative wrought iron hanging on your range hood cover to give it more presence.

I think continuing with the gallery wall would be fantastic, but the pieces look a little wobbly at the moment. I think the problem might be that they are not straight. It might also be that you are trying to put vertical and horizontal pieces together in the same size frame as the horizontal pieces. I think you need some larger pieces in the mix. I use glue dots on the corners to keep the frames straight. The smaller the frame, the more noticeable it will be if they are not straight. If you keep what you currently have, I would rearrange so that the vertical pieces are not all in the same row. @idaclaire has a fabulous gallery wall in her bathroom!

Curtains would be a good idea. Even though you have blinds for privacy, curtains make the windows look finished. A little eyeliner besides the mascara. I would not do a colored curtain here. Curtains are just to darn expensive to have to switch out when your color palette changes. I would suggest white or off white, whichever you prefer in a silk or silk-like fabric, and get a marvelous trim for the edge. The edge trim can be in a white and black or whatever color you want to take from your rug or elsewhere in the room. I would not do a curtain trim in gold here because I see 4 windows, for 8 panels, that would be a lot of gold. You want tasteful gold embellishment in a space, not Liberace in Las Vegas. Here are some examples of trimmed curtains. Buy the plain curtain, and then buy the trim of your choice, and buy extra trim to embellish throw pillows, and buy coordinating different scale trim for other throw pillows. Another curtain option is a white curtain with a subtle pattern woven or printed on it.

Throw up some tin ceiling and/or wall panels to define the space. Dark and moody.

Or corrugated metal

Add some shelves to display bottles and glassware

Put two 4x8 pieces of wood paneling up and the art in the center of each.

Reverse the bar so the glasses and bottles face the room. Place it against a paneled section. Get a floor lamp and a comfortable easy chair with an ottoman and side table. Or two armchairs.

Wait, I only read as far as you got rid of the stools. Didn't see that you got a new set. And who is Bette? I just Googled it, you mean red leather? How have I not heard of this place? I grew up in the Bay Area. Never spent much time in the EB tho.

Really and IMO if the rest of the open space is a different style IMO the speakeasy look is all wrong. I need to see the rest of the space please.
