Lifting lilies, take two
Comments (2)Hi quinnfyre, Some times of year are preferable to others but lilies can be moved anytime (if you have to). Because bulbs store a lot of energy, even fairly bad mishandling leads mostly to loss of a season's bloom but not the long term survival of the bulb. Besides, since you're moving, what do you have to lose? In May you'll have to be careful not to break off the new stalk emerging from the bulb. (If you do - no flowers this year.) Some lilies tend to wander underground before coming up so carefully dig a large circle and feel around with your hands. I've noticed this in some of my Orientals. (My Siberia do this a lot.) Species lilies that are stoloniferous would be especially tricky. I've had my Lankongense come up 8"-10" from where they were planted. Also try to get as much of the roots as possible, or your bulbs might decide to spend their energy growing roots rather than producing very many flowers. But really, as long as you don't chop them up with your shovel you should be OK. Actually, digging them up now though would be close to ideal. If your weather is similar to mine, Its been in the 40's - 60's for the past week or so, so the ground should be workable but not so warm that the lilies have started to grow much. Buy some cheap big pots at WalMart and just pot them up. Watch the weather and as long as we don't have any more really hard freezes leave them outside. You can then plant them in the ground (carefully) in May or leave them in pots for a season and plant them in the Fall. Good Luck! -Helen...See MoreFloor plan - take two
Comments (9)Definitely better! Where will the sink be? From a functional standpoint, I don't know if you need both island and peninsula, but IIRC, you want the outside view from the peninsula. Your island seating, if you need 4 stools, would not lend itself to conversation. A curved overhang, or a couple of stools at one end or the other, would work better, if the plan is to have 3 or 4 people eating at the island. I'm not crazy about the tiny closets in the entry. Depending on your climate, you can probably get away with just the closet by the office/powder room, assuming family will go in and out through the garage. That allows the windows/sidelights to be as big as possible - the deep covered entry (if I read correctly) will not allow much light in. I'm not very good at visualizing the front elevation given a floor plan, but I wonder what your roof lines will look like with the recesses by the mud room and front entry. How big is the garage? If the cars enter from the right, it seems your whole front yard will be driveway; if from the front or left side, it seems like a long hike for guests to get to the front door. How do you see landscaping the front of the house? OK, I've looked back and forth several times, and I saw your previous thread. But it wasn't until just now that I realized that your huge pantry is preventing you from having any windows on that side of the kitchen! I would either move the kitchen into that space, or eliminate it completely. I would put pantry storage on the fridge wall, with floor to ceiling shelves behind doors (so you aren't spending a fortune on pantry cabinets). Like a walk-in closet, a walk-in pantry eats up a lot of space with a walkway....See MoreTake Two: Please post pics of rooms w/BM Splendor!
Comments (7)Denali - Thank you!!! It looks really lovely in your kitchen. It also, interestingly, looks a lot lighter in your pictures than the sample pot wall swabs look in my dark, norther exposure room!! I'm nearly ready to make the commitment, and jump into this tomorrow morning, but I would LOVE to see some additional rooms and feedback from others...this has been such a tedious process! BTW, Denali, what white did you select to go with your Splendor?? Thanks so much again!...See MoreKitchen Makeover Take Two: countertops change?
Comments (24)I love the slab. I think the burgundy gives it interest and depth. My sister in law has it and I love looking at all the variety in her island. I replaced my Black Galaxy Granite on my island when we just did our kitchen remodel. The island is used constantly and it showed everything. I had windex in my hand 3 and 4 times a day. Even when the kids weren't eating, it showed the oil from their skin and I would have to wipe it down. I opted for white Quartzite on my new island, and I love everything about it. It shows nothing and I love all of the contrasts in the natural stone. I had to keep the Black Galaxy around the perimeter for budget reasons. It's fine since it doesn't have people touching it all the time, but I am in love with this lighter stone. Good luck!...See MoreLyn Nielson
