Dishwashers - features to get/avoid?
Comments (9)I just bought a new dishwasher after having a I purchased the Miele G5575. I wish I could yell from the rooftops just how much I love this dishwasher! This one has the built-in water softener and the china/crystal cycle, neither of which I need. I bought it because it was a floor model at a price that I couldn't pass up. 3rd rack for cutlery: For me, LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT. It allows you so much more room on your main rack and is so easy to use. It makes the most sense to me now that I use it on a daily basis. Honestly, that's what sold me on this model Miele. I had never seen a rack like that before but knew once I saw it that I had to have it. :) Hidden controls: I like the way they look much better. This model has them and so did my last model. It just gives the dishwasher a more streamlined and modern look. Manual clean filter: My Miele has one, which is extremely easy to use. I believe it will automatically tell me after so many washes that it needs to be cleaned. My GE had an automatic food grinder and I'd never use that type again. I often ended up with finely ground up food particles all over everything in the dishwasher. I frequently had to try and clean it out myself. No easy feat since it was in the very bottom back of the dishwasher. Quietness: They appear to all be more quiet than they used to be. I still think that the higher in model quality you go, the more quiet they are made to be. Heating: The Miele uses the condensation drying (do I have that term right?). There is no heating element. I believe Bosch uses the same system for drying. It works well in the Miele except for plastics, of course. I don't think any dishwasher has plastics all dry as soon as you open the door. Better through lifespan: I think Miele pretty much has it all over most other brands not only for staying quiet, but for overall longevity with much fewer problems. Since I got my dishwasher a few weeks ago, I've been showing more pictures of it than my grandchildren....LOL....See MoreGot it down to you options for gas range - thoughts please?

Comments (5)That's long been a sticking point with Whirlpool-made dishwashers that use cabinet-panel doors; depending on the cabinetry they are either a tight fit or won't fit flush at all. I would have assumed Whirlpool's European-market dishwashers already have the shallower dimensions and they could have sent one over to the US (the Bosch that Jenn-Air is using is also imported from Germany, or appears to be; it's certainly not the US Bosch design which is about 1-3/8" deeper). Those 'discerning customers' have probably cross-shopped Bosch or Thermador and will recognise the Jenn-Air as being the same thing, only with fewer features. The only rationale I can think of for Whirlpool not importing a Euro model is they'd have to either stock a unique set of parts in the US or make owners wait a long time for repair parts to be shipped from overseas; plus they'd have to train service techs. By rebadging a Bosch they can ue the existing Bosch parts and service infrastructure. Still, it feels rather like finding out a new top-of-the-range Cadillac is actually a rebadged BMW, with the explanation that Cadillac simply didn't have a car that fit into a market segment that was becoming popular. Makes me think that management wasn't very prescient about where the market was going....See MoreHelp! Dishwasher just died. Feature recommendations? Brand?
Comments (19)Thank you everyone for your comments! I have been researching and looking at them in stores and just an hour ago made a purchase and now will wait on delivery and installation next week. Here was my process: With comments and online review I had pretty much narrowed it down to Bosch or Miele, but also looked at KitchenAid to have more options. Miele- there was no one that sold it in town and only one store in the geographic area- it was 30 min away. They did not have prices on their website. I pretty much ruled this one out because online prices were hundreds more than the Bosch and KA and if it needed repairs reports of repairs were very high priced and hard to get service and or parts. Bosch- I thought that this was the one. Looked at models at Lowes and at Sears Hometown Appliance store. Was debating if I wanted the 500 series or pay $100 more to get the 800 series. Today, dragged my husband with me to shop and make a final decision. Went for the first time to a local Mom & Pop appliance store. Looking strictly at KA, since they do not carry Bosch. They had a good selection, the KA were very sturdy shelves, had the third rack, and were quiet. They could order it in white, with recessed handle rather than the bar. I brought our dishes and they all fit. Only downside is the third rack is not set up to hold silverware like the Bosch. They had a cheaper installation fee than Lowes and also do service in house, no need to call an 800 number and hope to get an actual human on the line. Left there and went to Lowes to double check the Bosch. Every rack on the 2 Boschs in the store were broken- one of them just broken since I had looked at them 2 days ago. That was problematic. Also, our dishes did not fit all the tines. And, the tines were tilted so our plates fit funny even in the spaces that they fit. Our cereal bowls did not work at all. We have Fiesta dinnerware for reference. We use the 9" buffet plate and the small bowl- not even the large/regular sized stuff. That decided us- KA it will be! We went back to the local store and couldn't be more happy to buy from them. They had excellent customer service. We are getting the recessed handle because in a galley kitchen I do not want to be catching my hip on the large, industrial style handle they have. Also, I like the controls on the front so that I can see when the machine is on. I am excited to have the option of heated dry if I want and also that I won't have to worry about the "stinky" smell that many Bosch reviews mentioned. No KA reviews mentioned any bad smells. I would have liked to have the silverware on the top third rack, but I am used to baskets so it won't be a big deal. Putting lids and other items on the top rack might even be more useful in the long run. I will let everyone know how it works once we get it in!...See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
