It's hard to get a sense of scale from those two photos. Can you post a sketch with full dimensions--length of walls, distance between walls, doorways, windows, etc. Show what rooms each doorway leads to as well, for the best suggestions.

Your plans suggest that your sink will be 21 feet from the refrigerator and stove. I would rethink that plan. I would move the sink to the left wall, eliminate the row of counters with the sink and also the peninsula. Then make the area by the window a breakfast area with a built-in booth. Eliminate the island and make a peninsula instead.

That's a tough space. I don't have any ideas, but I agree with Yvonne that the distance between the cooktop and the sink is not functional. There are some talented people who help here, I'm looking forward to seeing their ideas for your space.

you have an 81 inch walkway or so into the space. I'd give half of that to expand the peninsula. that gives you a u shape with the middle being the new window wall w sink. Place stove and fridge on long back wall. but I'd consider closing up the little window...interpreting the window going in and door over there to deck or patio...thats where the view and action is ???? ..what value is the little window any more? get positions for stove and fridge on long wall and in your kitchen I'd use a walk in pantry at the bottom where it says pantry w rollouts ......skip the island. I guess the extra things on stair wall is a coffee bar w the stacked oven.....but ovens could be moved if you build a walk in pantry .......you'll have another wall . you could do a lot w a walk in pantry w extra counter..some secondary countertop appliances.... a drop zone out of sight etc what would you do if a fairy came and gave you a walk in pantry??? you havent thought of it but think differently for a bit. not shown is the rest of the floor..do you have a half bath/mud room /laundry..etc. average kitchen size for average 1500sq foot home is 250 sq feet. you have two generous walls.... nearly 22 by 12 not even including stair wall so you are well above in terms of space.....get more value for your space.

Sorry the layout and the picture do not make sense to . Just post a to scale plan of the space nothing in it. Make sure you show every window doorway where the doorways lead and all measurements clearly marked make sure you show that post and its dimensions. BTW if get an actul indepednat KD they can think outside the box that does not happen with a cabunet salesperson.

Honestly, I think you need a new KD, seems to me there is a better layout thus not making one small post the problem. There is a lot of space here, the post should be easily built into the plan.

@Maggie May There is absolutely a beam there. The joist hangers are clearly visible in the picture. I can't find the post where the OP specifies the depth of the beam and/or the load above it.

I recommend asking questions that can help assess the adequacy of that beam, rather than just filling in all the blanks with assumptions.

This kitchen is big with miles of countertop but looks difficult to cook in. i see a prep sink in island which should help. but if anyone is sitting at those end stools its going to be hard to get around to cook or clean up! there are 2 ovens but no counter to unload them to despite tons of counter (i’d move them to range or side wall). no idea whats in the rest of the house but i’d be thinking about a smaller kitchen so you’re not walking miles and spending $$$$ on countertops that will never be used. maybe with a cozy eat in area - ie a banquet or something to make post intentional. it’s hard to know without a full layout or maybe everythings already ordered in which case i’d pay the 20k so you’re not so hemmed in.

Count this speed bump a blessing. That kitchen plan is AWFUL.

Sorry to be blunt but that layout is just poor. One never wants the major appliances more than 9' from one another. Unless you have a good pair of roller skates. You have 18' between the sink and the fridge with the island being a barrier between the two. And you have at least 12 to 13' between the sink and the cooktop!

When we cook, we take food out of the fridge and carry it to the sink to wash. Then we prep betwen the sink and the cooktop before moving the stuff to the stove to cook. Think of carrying all that and moving all that between the appliances. I'd be tired before even starting!

Add to that there is no landing for the ovens or the refidgerator. Now imagine taking hot food out of the oven. Where do you put it down? Pivoting 180 degrees to put it on the counter can be dangerous.

Plus the space between your island and perimeter counters where the cooktop is looks to only be 36". That is way too tight. Minimum if no one helps you cooks is 42" and if there is more than one person cooking at the same time, you need at least 48". If you were to make your aisle the minimum 42", you'd only have 29.5" between the island and the post. Way too narrow!

Is the window on the long wall already in? Or is that a new window? If not in already or it can be moved, there definitely is a better layout.

And where does the door opening at the bottom of the sketch lead to?

So sorry. I agree with everyone. That pole is the least of your worries. The island is much too big. It is leaving you with less than 36" walkways. It is a large kitchen and where the appliances are set will have you running in circles. That will be problematic when you have many people in the house. It looks like the window on that main wall is not installed yet. That is a good thing. The new window being centered on the wall is destroying the space for a good kitchen layout.

It looks like you are doing a nice hood over the cooktop. That should be where the windows are and then maybe do a window on each side of the hood.

Move the ref and wall ovens as well - they are in an unfortunate place.

Have you ordered these cabinets yet? If not , rethink this whole plan.

Thankyou all for your concern, our architect and contractor are on top of things regarding the post..that post was always there, we just extended our kitchen and that post is incorporated within the counter (the ledge) on the side with a smaller island (8ft or less as opposed to 10 ft that I had originally thought. there is a 42-inch walkway all around except if I increase the size of the island. I was hoping to see some ideas to use that post without losing the length of my island ( from 10ft to 8ft or less). We have a meeting to go over some design ideas soon so I thought I can get some ideas. We have a full permit for everything so the weight-bearing post is approved and everything is in accordance. Yes keeping the fridge away from the stove was very intentional..that's a personal preference for the way I work in the kitchen:) but good to hear all the suggestions and comments. thankyou.

I may be confused. Your blueprint plan shows the kitchen being 11'9" across - 139" but the design plan with the cabinets is showing that same run as 162". That's a big difference. The long wall is also different by about a foot.

Of course blueprints aren't accurate, but that is far off.

The post is not the problem. The layout is. By my rough calculation you have more than 40 feet of counterfront, and that doesn't include the island. I'm guessing many commercial kitchens have much less than that. I don't have an answer for the post, but my best advice is to hire a talented kitchen designer who can help you design a kitchen which actually functions well. The money spent on the designer will be more than made up for in cabinet and countertop savings.

I'm with the others in that your plan could greatly be improved, but with those thoughts aside, I think that there is no disquising the post without a wall. You still have a good size opeing connecting the kitchen with the dining room. The two colors (blue and red) give you two options for a wall. If you go with the blue wall you'll have an opportunity to place furniture or shelving on the dining room side. The red wall will give you more countertop space in the kitchen.

If you eliminate the useless stretch of counter on the “south” wall, your island can move down. Consider making a pantry or coat closet out of that post (not sure where the door leads), but regardless, the refrigerator must move.
