Freestanding tub with shower

Ej Sarkis
last year

My second bathroom has a freestanding tub, which is more of a sculpture. We would like to be able to take showers in that thing and dont want to spend too much money on this project. Not sure if its too much to ask, but i already got a new diverter, shower head, and a long hose. I’m going to get an oval shower ring, and attach shower head to it and have handheld/overhead shower setup.

I’m worried about the wall behind the tub. Its got wainscot that goes up to about 3-4 feet and then just dry wall. I have never owned a freestanding tub and have never taken a shower in one. I found a lot of pics on this site with such setup (ie wainscot and drywall behind tub). Again, I don’t want to spend too much money, and I’m thinking of the following options:

  • Remove wainscot, put water resistant drywall and frp on top of it.
  • Keep wainscot (wife likes the looks of wainscot). Paint the wall behind with mold resistant paint, and apply paint sealer.

Any other ideas, what would you do?
