Choosing the right in-ground fitting for my umbrella

Hi,

I’m currently remodeling my backyard and I would like an umbrella for the lounging area, but choosing the right base is more challenging than expected.

I hate movable bases, so I’d like to install an in-ground fitting. However, I’m not ready to settle for a specific umbrella make yet, and I’d like to make it as flexible as possible, in case I decide to change the umbrella in the future.

Is there a standard type of fitting, embedded in concrete, that I could attach any adapter plate to, and use any type of umbrella?

After many years of patio umbrellas with center holes, I find the offset umbrella works best for me. I purchased the set from IKEA and buried the base below the ground surface & installed my artificial turf over the top so that only the pole is exposed. It didn't budge during Hurricane Ian.

I suppose cheeschoth could be used, but becasue its cotton based, and quite course, birds beaks may be able to go between the weave. The plastic fabric doesn't break down and holds up to weather. Its also fairly tough so birds or bugs can't seem to get through it. The next alternative may be to use chicken wire or a finer screening attached to a wooden frame that raises it up off the soil a few inches. Acting like a screened in tent, it can also block birds. You must monitor it though as once seedlings reach through the holes in the screening or netting, the plants wil be difficult to handle. Even worse if they are able to get through the cheese cloth weave.

If it's gunite as long as there's a recess into the gunite around the sleeve you'll be fine, and if it's dirt pour some sackcrete around it. You can obtain nearly the same level of protection by using GFCI receptacles. This is a code approved way to put 3-hole receptacles on a circuit without a grounding conductor. Every GFCI receptacle comes with the required stickers. The 'No equipment ground sticker' goes on the GFCI receptacle, while any downstream (load side of the GFCI) 3-hole duplex receptacles get the 'GFCI protected' AND a 'No equipment ground' stickers.

That would be my advice too. I love offset umbrellas and this is a simple way to do this. We attached our base to the deck. I think putting this in concrete has issues and one for me would be what happens when you want to change the layout .. maybe you would be best with an awning off the wall instaed.

Just to clarify, I am also looking at a cantilever umbrella. However, I don’t want to have a movable base because it’ll take space from the planting bed.

I didn't even know this was a thing! I've been wanting a cantilever umbrella for my little flagstone patio seating area and was dreading the base. Thanks for posting about it and thank you Beverly for sharing a good option.
