Choosing the right in-ground fitting for my umbrella

Hi,

I’m currently remodeling my backyard and I would like an umbrella for the lounging area, but choosing the right base is more challenging than expected.

I hate movable bases, so I’d like to install an in-ground fitting. However, I’m not ready to settle for a specific umbrella make yet, and I’d like to make it as flexible as possible, in case I decide to change the umbrella in the future.

Is there a standard type of fitting, embedded in concrete, that I could attach any adapter plate to, and use any type of umbrella?

After many years of patio umbrellas with center holes, I find the offset umbrella works best for me. I purchased the set from IKEA and buried the base below the ground surface & installed my artificial turf over the top so that only the pole is exposed. It didn't budge during Hurricane Ian.

I have an area similar to yours, although I have no way of knowing whether your garden is as hot and dry as mine. I've failed with quite a few roses there, even with ridiculous amounts of watering. Right now Souvenir de la Malmaison and White Meidiland are doing reasonably well, but only with extremely watchful watering. I do have a young Mme. de Sombreuil in full sun which is doing very well in spite of having been planted as a band a few months ago. Lots of mulch would be my suggestion, and faithful watering. You can obtain nearly the same level of protection by using GFCI receptacles. This is a code approved way to put 3-hole receptacles on a circuit without a grounding conductor. Every GFCI receptacle comes with the required stickers. The 'No equipment ground sticker' goes on the GFCI receptacle, while any downstream (load side of the GFCI) 3-hole duplex receptacles get the 'GFCI protected' AND a 'No equipment ground' stickers.

If you're using MDF as the ceiling material, I'd be inclined to go with IC style cans. As this is not conditioned space, airtight is not a requirement. The only other real option is whether you intend to put the cans up first and hence can use new work cans, or you are going to put the ceiling in first and therefore need retrofit. I've never had any issues with the cheapest (commercial electric) cans from there. Just by ones that are compatible with the trim you want to use.

That would be my advice too. I love offset umbrellas and this is a simple way to do this. We attached our base to the deck. I think putting this in concrete has issues and one for me would be what happens when you want to change the layout .. maybe you would be best with an awning off the wall instaed.

Just to clarify, I am also looking at a cantilever umbrella. However, I don’t want to have a movable base because it’ll take space from the planting bed.

I didn't even know this was a thing! I've been wanting a cantilever umbrella for my little flagstone patio seating area and was dreading the base. Thanks for posting about it and thank you Beverly for sharing a good option.
