Why were they wearing so MUCH perfume?
Comments (8)Years ago, I read that you can only smell your own perfume for about 2 minutes. Your nose adjusts and then ignores that aroma. Because of that, many people literally cannot smell how much perfume or cologne or aftershave they have doused on. I worked with a lovely gal who had an awful [to me] tendency to apply too, too, too much. One day, when a co-worker asked why she was wearing so much (you could smell her from a 100 feet away), she looked surprised and said she thought she had forgotten to put any on! The capper came when she had to be hospitalized for a week; later she told us that she when she returned home, she could smell the perfume wafting from her apartment as soon as she got out of the elevator. That was a shock to her, but not to us. I think it's not just candles, pot pourri, and colognes... have you noticed a distinct increase in the aromic pervasiveness of soaps, shampoos, fabric 'fresheners', etc. being far stronger than before. For years I used 'Dove' bath soap. A year ago I picked up a package of the bars and, OMG, it smelled so strong I couldn't stand to have the wrapped package in the shopping cart. This is not a sudden change in me, but in the manufacturer's formulation. Ditto for several brand-name laundry detergents and softners. I'm told that as we age, we'll lose a great deal of our sense of smell. Apparently I haven't lost enough of it to enable a happy toleration of the increase in perfumeries....See MoreThe tree that wears perfume
Comments (20)My Clerodendrum trichotomum is lovely, but I'm beginning to regret its introduction to my garden. I have one that is a single stemmed tree form, as opposed to multistemmed. Right now it is about 16' tall and in full carmine/turquoise flower. Gorgeous. BUT - this tree must drop a thousand seeds and I swear each one germinates. They are in the lawn, between the pavers, all around the ground below it. I've created a weeding nightmare. On top of that, this year the tree has started sending up suckers up to 20' away from the trunk. One day nothing is there - then it seems like the next day the sucker is a foot high. So far, I like the tree enough to put up with it. But the negative side is starting to mount....See Morewhat do you wear for everyday jewelry, and does it coordinate?
Comments (65)What I fun thread! I'm late to the party but a few thoughts. 1) Re the poster above: I think pearls, and diamonds, do go with anything. I would say though, that right now, white pearls are less popular. I say this as someone with quite a large collection of them; they were always my favorite. But in the last five years or so I pretty much only wear my oversized grey south seas pearls. 2) In re "investment". Sorry, not really, not at all. Jewelery has some of the most egregious markups in retail. It can go in and out of fashion, also potentially eroding value. And it can be easily damaged. We recently liquidated a family estate, and I was shocked to hear that some of the diamond rings were quite highly devalued because "they had been worn 'too often' and had damage (not visible to the eye". That was news to me, that I am damaging my diamond by wearing it. 3) Girls and jewelry. My girls were both born very close to Christmas. The thought of trying to buy them gifts just a few weeks later was maddening and wasteful. So, starting when the first turned one and second was newborn, I buy them each a piece of fine jewelry each birthday. They cannot wear it -- it is kept in a safe -- but they get a great deal of enjoyment from it just the same (every few months they beg us to take it out and try it on). They will receive the jewelry to wear on their 16th birthday. I try to buy "timeless" things, and items I can see both a 16yo and a 46yo wear. 4) Watches. I wear mine for decorative purposes. In fact, given how wildly expensive the maintenance is on luxury watches (several hundred dollars every 2-3 years), I am considering letting them go and using them only for jewelry! What a crock these sellers are. 5) Everyday jewelry. I wear my engagement ring and wedding band. Usually with diamond studs but I have a lot of earrings I switch out. My engagement ring is a round diamond in a square basket setting, copied from my grandmother's ring. I lost my wedding ring, which was a rolling ring with two gold bands and one pave diamond band. I lost it about 18 months ago, but I kept thinking it would show up. I am so bummed. I just recently bought a plain gold Cartier wedding band with the little screw motif. It's simple but a little different, and it goes with my favorite daytime watch, which is the iconic gold/stainless Cartier tank with the little screws. This thread needs photos!...See MoreWhat Perfumes are you wearing?
Comments (82)How does Lauder sell a single bottle of Youth Dew? I truly wonder. Have never heard one person say a kind word about the stuff...ever! When I was about thirteen years old, the lifeguard at our community pool, Chris, about 18, so cute, and my "buddy," came over to me and started whispering about some ladies who were visiting the pool that day. He said, "...and one of them has on a perfume that I know must be Youth Dew! Yick! It's the worst perfume in the world. My mother was given a bottle and she wore it once, but she never will again, because she hated it, and my dad and I told her to wash it off it smelled so bad!" I do love woodsy, exotic fragrances, which I think YD is trying to be, but it misses the mark somehow. Maybe it's just too much of a good thing...no nuance or subtlety?...See Moremtnrdredux_gw
