which seeds should store in fridge & which at room temp?
Comments (18)If you open a package of cold seed to the open air, silica gel in that package won't keep them dry. The water content of refrigerator air and freezer air is generally *much* lower than that of the air outside. In a freezer, pretty much all the water is stuck to the wall. Freezer air and refrigerator air can give the impression of being moist, because when you open them up, moist room air gets in and condenses into a fog. But that's air that came in to them from the outside. Low temperatures add many years of useful lifetime to seeds. There are some seeds (I don't remember which) that really don't like to be frozen, though. I keep all of mine in the fridge....See Morewhich ones are from big box stores
Comments (3)I put a buyers guide on eBay. It's about 60% of what I'd like to say but I ran out of space. Why they would limit space on those things I have no idea. There is also a little bit of info on Deere's site. When looking at the new tractors, you need to click on "NON-CURRENT EQUIPMENT." There you will find info on 316, 318, 322, 425, 435, 445, LT, LX, GT, GX, and X400-500 (now X700). The department store models are the L100-130, LA100-150, G100, G110, 102, 115, 125, 135, 145, 155C, and 190C. And they all have the same awkward styling, looking nothing like the dealer-only models. Comments (17)Can't remember the brand name now (it was several years ago), but the people at the toll-free number denied up and down that the can of corn I bought could have possibly contained peas, but I know the difference between peas and corn... no, really, I do. Could a bunch of different labels have fallen off a bunch of cans and the wrong one gotten misapplied to mine? Maybe. Anything is possible. We ended up eating fried chicken and peas... it was interesting. lol, this has certainly taught me at least one thing - if I care *very much* about what I'm getting I had darn well better get it while it is in bloom. I can usually believe what I see (except for magic tricks). I still wonder if somewhere else in the world somebody is wondering why their Black-eyed Stella from Costco doesn't look *right* - "What's this purple outline doing here? None of the others have that... And it looks so pale compared to the rest." LOL. I know I would rather experience that scenario, but not everybody has our taste. ;-) Vive la difference! I will continue to shop at the big boxes (just got some packaged Superstition black iris and can't-remember-the-name purple/white iris to go alongside at Wal-Mart - there were gold and purple Stella DL in boxes but I wasn't interested) because I cannot afford the nurseries at this point, but at least I know better now the risks. Thanks for the heads up, Kay. Thanks for the original question, mmqchdygg (wow, it's easier to type when ya know what it stands for!!!)...See MoreGarden Centers - Greenhouses - Big Box Stores - Specialty Stores
Comments (7)Brocks! We're heading down there and to Dearborn Farms tomorrow. To be honest, I shop all over. We bought 12 boxed roses at Dearborn Farms last spring, but I got some really nice potted roses in Lowe's (Woodbridge, Jersey City, and Old Bridge) and Wal-Mart (Secaucus, Cinnamonson, and Old Bridge) -- all of them did really well, and have leafed out like crazy this spring. Like you, I've been buying Superthrive at Wal-mart (it's not out yet, and I don't have all that much left right now -- and not every store had it, either) as well as fish emulsion. We got some great annuals there to fill in the gaps in the plants we bought in Van Wingerden's and Gro-Rite up in Lincoln Park. I get potting soil for my containers and garden soil to beef up the beds in Lowe's, and I get mulch there, too. I get pots and little plastic garden fencing in Wal-Mart. Home Depot was disappointing last year, especially since we'd gotten some wonderful roses there in the past (in Clifton and Woodbridge). But Clifton's garden center has gone -way- downhill, and Woodbridge isn't what is used to be. But none of them compare to Hoverman's, now sadly closed....See MoreRelated Professionals
