Which flooring for whole-house (including kitchen)?
Comments (2)I do a lot of the wood tile and folks love it. Durable, easy to keep clean, as well. You might be able to hit your "price point," depending on your area. Lowe's generally has some very nice product for about $2.25 per sq. ft., as I recall....See MoreOpen Palette : Need suggestions for Kitchen Update/Remodel
Comments (12)You have a large amount of darkish wooden surface -- the individual bits are elegant but the sheer mass of it seems to make the space a bit claustrophobic. To modernize and brighten the kitchen without an enormous investment, I think you are quite right to start by painting your cabinets and the soffits as well. Unless you are really pleased with the window valence, you might also think about removing it for a more modern look. And I believe it is not a big deal to have a few of your upper cabinet doors glazed. Finally, in the realm of cost-efficient changes, you might think about tweaking your lighting scheme. Certainly look at installing undercabinet lighting if you do not already have it. In its kitchen displays, HD now has UCL that is not harsh, does not heat the cabinets too much, and is of all things GE flourescents. It is not dimmable, but the cost is reasonable and the effect is nice. And think about changing the receptacles in your ceiling cans from convex to something with baffles, so that the light is more in pools and less diffuse. If you like having the fan and do not feel the absence of a vent, I would leave the fan, perhaps either lowering it a bit or trying to find a light kit that gives you usable light at the cooktop. I would also leave the floor for now if you can. Cool tile is nice underfoot in a warm climate, and you would only have to worry about making sure that the colors of your cabinets and walls work with what looks to me to be pale gray. I would keep the granite you have now. After the painting and light tweaking is done, you can consider such alterations as having it honed or changing the backsplash if you think something more is needed. When you are ready to go the whole nine yards -- moving walls, changing the shapes of windows, and doing new cabinet layouts so as to create the handsome open spaces that so many people on this forum manage to create, then it will be worthwhile to look at new everything. Cheers and good luck. I'm sure you know that a few of us would give our eye teeth to be starting with your "before."...See MoreSuggestions for a kitchen budget update
Comments (40)Wanted to post my update. Here's the after. I have to say that it is not that yellow in real life, the floor, in particular. 1. Removed the leggy thing. It was wobbly and ready to collapse. Added IKEA kitchen cart. Ignore the blue tub. Bottom black thing is the door drying after gel staining. I added a shelf for the MW. IKEA Besta, 5.00, has the ideal measurements. 2. Ended up gel staining the lowers because they were in rough shape and just sanding and varnishing didn't work. The veneer was thin and cracked in places and plywood started showing throw. Love, love GF gel stain. It was very easy and looks great, even from close-up. I ended up with three coats of polyvarnish, so we'll see how it holds up. 3. New cooktop (SS), counters, sink, and faucet. And, yes, I know, the 4" backsplash is BAAAD and outdated, but I couldn't decide on a backsplash so quickly and didn't want to risk leaving nothing in a rental, especially behind the sink. 4. New track light from IKEA. And new paint, one lighter than SW Agreeable Gray (Incredible White). The rest of the apartment is Agreeable Gray (LOVE IT). 5. I may replace the fridge with a SS counter depth. Or was even thinking about a huge black and white photo on the side. In the meantime, the IKEA Grundtal space containers will be useful and perhaps a magnetic knife holder. It rented to the first person....See MoreKitchen updates suggestions?
Comments (14)I don't know about white walls w/that kitchen. it will look very washed out. have you thought about doing a warmer, darker gray? Kendall Charcoal? That would look very nice w/the white ceiling, and the rest of the kitchen. quick mock up tried to put the colors in here to show you how nice the Kendall contrast looks w/the white door and trim. imagine the white trim around the window too. Simply White is the perfect white. All of these pics are Kendall. I have it on my own wall and love it. below is a pic of it on the cabs w/the white trim/counter, and a lighter gray on the walls. You could do the lighter gray in tile w/your new white countertops those french doors are not original to the house. Look at the black on both doors. I'd paint them. remove them if you can, sand them to smooth them out, and give the a coat of oil base primer. when dry, fine sand the primer, wipe clean, and paint. use a nice white. it will look great w/the Kendall color around it. paint the wood trim white around the door and windows. those french doors have also suffered some water damage at the bottom. I would look at your drainage issues outside before we get to winter. Countertop options Cambria Roxwell Caesarstone Pure White...See Moreherbflavor
