My dog is 16 lbs. so I get the smallest size, 6 lbs.

2 great danes here. i used to buy the 47# bags but they just got too heavy to handle so now i buy the 35# bags. one bag lasts about 1 month.

my lad is 20 pounds. I buy a largish bag 20 pounds once every 6 weeks; but try to keep a spare 12 ish lb bag in case SHTF.

If you have a smaller dog, I would not suggest buying a too large of a bag because it can go stale if not eaten. My dog is 74 lbs as of last weigh in and I buy a 25 lb (ish) bag. It lasts a few weeks, I don't really keep of with it. I just buy a new bag when the old one starts to run low.

I bags between 30 and 35 pounds depending on the formula available. Supply chain affects what's on the shelf. She (Rottie) weighs a very fit (has a waistline) 82 pounds and a bag is good for around 7 or a bit more weeks with twice a day feedings. I hate seeing an overweight dog. But we transfer from a large storage bin to a smaller Tupperware container and when the the last goes in that, I go buy another bag.

I am ending up buying whatever size Purina ONE has for my two elderly dogs. There have been supply chain issues for many products but I have no clue why it is PURINA ONE dry food and no other brand. There is plenty of dry Purina ONE on the shelves for my cats but I had to order from Chewy to get the dog food.

I have not noticed a change in the weight of the bags, just the change in price. Purina One, for instance, comes in 4 different weights. When I was feeding it, I always bought the 40# bag. The largest bag that was available at WalMart was the 30ish # bag. Menard's stocks the 40# bag so I bought it at Menard's. I've since switched to the brand the grand dog eats because my dog likes it and having one kind of dog food makes life easier. Recent price increase of almost 30%; the weight of the bag is still the same.

How long do you think it lasts?

It is not so much the age of the food that causes it to go stale but how it has been stored. If you store it in the garage year-round the way I have seen some people do the changes in temperature will rapidly degrade the food. Heat can cause the oil in it to go rancid quickly.

With the supply chain issues for both dog and cat food when I open a bag I purchase another bag just in case. Most dry petfood that is marked often has a best by date that is a year or two in the future but again that depends on how it is stored.

Dry dog food is dead food. It is made that way for storage purposes, You never know how long it has been on the shelf w/o checking the expiry date.

I open a bag and store the bag contents in a plastic sealed container [sans bag]. I make sure to give my dog some live food a couple times weekly. That may include some toast topped with peanut butter and cut into chunks.

Lucille, you have a Lab puppy so shelf life is pretty much a non-issue!

Dog food shipments to Menard's comes in on pallets. High turnover on product. I see people in there buying 5 or more big 40# bags of dog food at a time. Breeders, I suppose but some people around have a small herd of sporting/ hunting dogs, too. As long as you are buying from a warehouse store or similar that has a high turnover, probably needn't be concerned about best by dates.

I buy the 40# size for my big boy Sheltie. He is around 35#, free feeds, not an ounce of fat on him but he eats almost as much as my son feeds his Golden Retriever. The Golden is a glutton and could never be free fed.

Just with the last two bags--I have repackaged in whatever food safe container I could scrounge including mylar potato chip bags (fold & staple closed) and storing the basement fridge. Mostly because I wanted to get the dog food bin out of the kitchen.
