Name That Plant!

Goldenrod on the left, ? on the right

last year

I harvested seeds from trailside stands of the one on the left to plant in my back yard, but evidently got some of what's on the right. There's not enough info online for me to figure out whether the one on the right is Solidago at all. The in-situ pic shows them growing side-by-side in my yard.

Thanks for the detective work. I see from the Wikipedia page that S. altissima has an interesting complex ecology. Now that I have a colony established in my yard I'm looking forward to following its evolution.

They are both Solidago, just different species, there are many. If you want IDs, we would need the location, and close up pictures of leaves,(top and underside), stem, basal leaves, and flowers with involucres.

Doc--seriously??? It's a religion issue? Huh. Never heard of that. My old kitchen was DW left of sink. Being very right-handed, I was used to that directional movement and felt it made ergonomic sense. Then, while working my new kitchen layout, the DW would have needed to be on the right. I was worried, but read lots of posts here saying that neither placement is "correct" and that you easily get used to whichever side yours is on. True. It took me about two weeks to not feel awkward while loading the DW in my new kitchen. *Caveat. I have never used hand washing as the way to clean the majority of my dishes. Growing up I had a DW and have had one in every residence since college. My hands have always been sensitive to water which felt hot enough to come remotely close to cleaning dishes well, and I dislike standing at the sink for so long being wet. Isn't that what a DW is for?

originally the island was 24" cabinets with a 24" overhang on the other side, which we wanted to make bigger, thinking that it would be a better scale given how big the room is, and because of how much empty space there is between the island and the breakfast area. the cabinets under the overhang will be for pretty deep storage so I'm not too worried about crawling under there, but we probably also don't need a 24" overhang. we stuck in a row of 24" cabinets without really thinking through the stone. 100x78" slabs do exist, but barely. I agree we should make the island smaller. I wonder if there's a different island layout that fills the space more. I haven't been able to convince my wife to even consider two islands :)

Side Dryer Vent - Left or Right

These photos are an electric Whirlpool unit. It can be vented out the back, left, right, and bottom. There's room to run the exhaust to the right under the heater box. Models that can't route out one side or the other are obstructed by the electric element housing or the gas burner assembly to the respective direction. Changing the routing requires disassembling the machine for access. The 4" exhaust duct in the center is removed from the blower housing and either cut shorter and reused or replaced with a new shorter piece and a 90° elbow to the left or right (or bottom) for routing through a pre-scored knock-out on the side or bottom accordingly. This model has a sound insulation panel on the left that also has a scored spot to be removed for left-side conversion. An additional short piece of straight ducting is placed on the elbow to reach fully out of the dryer, or the cut-off piece of the original duct can be used for that purpose. A conversion kit offered by the manufacturer may include everything needed.

Front door swing - left or right?

@millworkman and @Virgil Carter apologies - being on the build site all day and answering late last night must have had my brain fried! The building code is in relation to the actual front door and impacts whether or not we would have.a side light that is opaque or clear (resulting in multiple peepholes) regardless, due to the proximity of the front door to the sidewalk, we most likely need it to be opaque for privacy reasons but the window on the side of the home that gives light to the foyer is less invasive (and large) hence why we have removed the door side light. Appreciate all feedback - we're going to keep the swing as shown on the plans!

In your previous post https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6317517/anemic-looking-goldenrod-soil-vs-sun you said the seeds came from the same patch and put the differences down to growing conditions. Do you no longer think that’s the case?

I doubt they could be the same species, due to conditions. The leaf sizes are very different. I collected seeds for Oligoneuron rigidus and had a Solidago speciosa grow from those seeds. Most likely a speciosa seed flying through the air got caught by the Stiff Goldenrod seed head.

From the first picture I can barely make out the different flowers and I can’t distinguish any leaf size differences.

I just looked at the 1st picture. Solidago canadensis has a lot of variation. The 2 side by side, could possibly both be S. canadensis. Ive seen it look like both forms. They are both Solidago. The patch looks like what S. c. would do if left alone for a few years.

up from the ground, except the bee pic is from Sep. 12.

I think it's the same species.

I revisited this post to get the exact ID. This goldenrod species is Solidago altissima, or more precisely the Solidago altissima complex which includes 3 varieties. The different varieties can occur together, and there can be specimens that exhibit intermediate stages between varieties.

This photo shows Solidago altissima var. altissima on the left. The upper leaves are not reduced in size. The goldenrod on the right is Solidago altissima var. pluricephela. The inflorescence is elongated and the upper leaves are reduced in size.

In this photo the shorter plant on the left is Solidago altissima var. pluricephela. The plant on the right looks intermediate showing traits from both Solidago altissima var. altissima and Solidago altissima var. pluricephela.
