Furniture Design Dilemma living room

New house New living room furniture

Help need some advice on arranging furning ( and new furniture) in this awkward living. Everything in the living room will be gone. I dont know where to start and it is getting overwhelming

I think you need a designer to help . Since you are buying new most good furniture stores have a free service so start there As for actual layout we need a to scale floor plan of the space , all measurements clearly marked , some clue as to your style . Is this the only place for a TV? How many seats do you need usually? The mor einfo we get the more help you get .I did have apeek at your idea book and see a ton of sectionals so I will give you my opinion on that type of seating. I think they are the most expensive way to be buy the least number of comfy seats since comfort comes from arm rests so 2 peope comfy all the rest lined up like on the centrer seat of a sofa not mention awful for conversation. A sofa and 2 chairs are a nice combo with 4 seats that are comfy .Stay away from loveseats since really they are a seat for one. This looks like a really nice open space I thin there are great opportunities to make this an awesome room If that is a fake tree head it out to the garbage . You have great natural light do real plants . If at all possible also post pics of that whole area. Do not start another post just add info in a comment on this post.

how many people usually use the room? and do you prefer to sit straight or to lounge? if you mostly prefer to sit straight...and it's your main living space in the house where guests of different ages come etc..push the sofa closer to the window..(since the bookshelf is not staying)..two armchairs facing: one, the TV, another, the sofa..kinda angled, like they're having a conversation, you know? the coffee table gets to be in the middle.and you can add a side table between the chairs. maybe something round, so not everything gets to be rectangular etc. I'd definitely put TV lower either on a console ot over the console. in this scenario TV stays where it is but you get a) much better viewing angle b) storage c) simply nicely composed space. It can still swivel so you don't loose that function. The console should be longer than the TV. If the mirror stays over the sofa it needs to be lower. The rules of art and mirror placement change when they are over the furniture..they should relate to the said furniture. There are guidelines, but generally you can eyeball it ..if it looks good then it's good. If strongly prefer to lounge..then instead of sofa you can get a sectional with corner part under the window. You might be able to put a chair on the other side of the coffee table, depending on how big or small the chair is..you don't want to cramp it too much. If no space for a chair-consider switching your coffee table for an ottoman (don't match exactly to a sectional). can serve as a coffee table very easily if you have a tray on it. But can also be used for additional sitting if you have company..especially kids love these. You can have a side table on one or both sides of the sectional, depending how much space you'll have. I'd definitely add some lights. A table lamp. Or a floor lamp. These are food for specific tasks like reading or mending; they're also create pleasant ambient light. You're more in control of your lighting thus mood you want to create, and function you want to get depending on what you do, if you have different lights on diffrerent levels. I love your curtains and floors and a rug..and a dog..:) It will be a very cozy room

To visually open up the room I would suggest lighter drapes close to the wall color without a pattern or with a self pattern. I would remove the stair ladder deal in the corner (they were a passing trend) and clear the TV chest of everything. Consider doing a grouping of pictures around the TV and above it to fill in that area and give the room some needed visual interest. Beverly's layout is very nice, although I've personally found that darker drapes tend to close in a room, but it's your preference. I would consider a rug an absolute must.

Congrats on your new house! It looks like your layout is similar to mine. I wouldn’t put the couch against the stairs even though it gives you more room. If you do, then you have to walk through the living room to get to the stairs and other rooms and it’s usually better to have a defined path if you can. I really wanted a sectional but couldn’t make it work. We’re getting new furniture and this is the layout we will probably have - no loveseat but two chairs at an angle. We walk from the kitchen into the living room all the time, so we wanted to keep an entry between the chairs and the sofa.

You'll get the best help if you can please provide us with a hand drawn floor plan and measurements. Please label where the living room and dining room is on the floor plan. A couch and chairs are easier to decorate than a sectional. Bland is not bad - it gives you a lot of options - it doesn't limit you. If you want to pick out your style, put in top HOUZZ search box (one at a time) different styles. Here are just a few - transitional, modern, traditional, eclectic, casual. Regarding your mirror - just keep in mind that mirrors are best when they have an interesting reflection.

I have to disagree about sectionals being the least comfortable seating. That seems like a fairly personal choice. If your family likes a casual vibe and actually lounges on sofas rather than sitting upright ALL the time, sectionals are amazing even with guests. I have one and wouldn’t trade it for the world. Your space seems perfect for a sectional since it is so big, there is plenty of room. The current layout is all the chopped up with too many/too small furnishings and not very cozy or inviting. A large sectional could fix that. I do agree about hitting up a free design consult. It’s at least a place to start so you know what size furniture is best for your space. Then you could shop around.

It seems like, if you are looking at having a TV area still, that the current wall would be the best one. However we might recommend a long, low console or doing a whole wall dedicated to the TV area. Then if you want you could place a sofa or sectional facing the TV and then have a small conversation area behind the sectional or sofa. Please see some of our designs included here for more ideas:
