Porches & Decks Design Dilemma entry

How to update porch.

last year

My wife and I want to possibly raise the height of our gabled porch or update the design to make more of a statement. We are also replacing the door and side lights. We are considering a double door. We are lost on styles and ideas.

Good grief. This looks like a hillbilly contractor built a house after going to a clearance sale at Home Cheapo. Luckily, I'm a hillbilly with a vague sense of style and a conscience. Replace the ornate door with something simple and clean. The stone veneer looks tidy and well-done, so leave it alone and work with it. The stark white trim around the upper picture widow and on the vertical corner looks ridiculous, so soften it with a darker color. The bones and proportions of your porch and entry are just fine. Once you think things through, install an appropriate door and change the paint colors, you'll be amazed.

Your house looks like it could go a bit contemporary so maybe the railing could be black metal and eiter glass panels or just the same metal for spindles and beef up the columns

I would suggest adding a wide band of trim just above where the tops of the columns meet the wall. This should give the illusion of a beam being supported by the columns. The columns seem a bit undersized. I think I would replace them but instead of plain square columns I would give them a brick base with a brick or stone cap. I "might" suggest painting the entire house the same color - brick and siding but you should really give some thought to that. Once painted, brick can never be unpainted. It is a lovely house and a great lot. I LOVE the mature trees. Good luck!

If you're adding a wood ceiling, then pick a wood that echoes your porch floor. If you're not installing a wood ceiling, paint it a pale blue, a lovely custom. Lights in your inspiration photo are lovely. Keep the porch color consistent with the house so that it's an outdoor extension of it and makes the house seem more spacious. Your porch is already a "wow."

The style of your front door and gable must match/blend with your whole house. Which you didn’t show us.

A fixed awning over the door would look great and complement the other features of your home.

Not seeing that you can fit a double door? Something like this might work:

If you want, tell the placement purpose of the windows - I think of the window above the entry for example, and whether it's in a stairwell...

i like your entry as is. But, you're right that it needs some umph. What is missing is more of a "grand entrance" to the front door. I'd remove all of the older hedges on the left side of the door (facing the house). Then, a brick walk up, with some curves?

Unfortunately, there is not much of a foyer when you walk in. The window up above is to a bathroom on the second floor. To the right of the door is a dining room and to the left is another living room.
