Comments (22)Herman, you are right. Coll de Dama is a good choice for anybody with a long and sunny summer, it is a very late ripening variety. Negronne is a better option for cooler climates. The Mediterranean region of Spain has an excellent climate for figs but not my region (North coast of Spain). Sometimes, the summers are cloudy and rainy but, fortunately, it isn't rare September and October months with dry and mild temperatures due to a predominant warm south wind. Comments (4)I totally agree. I've purchased several trees from Bass over the past 6 months. I gave him my number and he called me and talked about my order and other trees he has. Comments (11)Tell us more about what you want, a shade tree or figs to eat. If you want to eat figs, that 'bush' is well formed. I had 4 plants in a 12' x 14' space between 2 driveways in Palo Alto, CA. Each year there is at least the chance of a few days in the mid to upper 20's F. I learned about controlling height after the largest had grown so that I needed a ladder to reach the top. I used it to test out new varieties by bark grafting fresh new growth on the donor tree. I'd suggest pruning to restrict the tree to main crop figs; they are the best tasting in my experience. After the last chance of a hard frost I'd cut last year's growth back to 1 bud facing where I wanted the branch to grow. When that reached 6-8 new leaves I'd start pinching out the new growth buds until the season ends. Some varieties only need one pinching, others send up a new shoot that must be removed before it grows to a point that is out of reach. Do an image search on your favorite search engine for the string "fig pruning" to see the possibilities. Remember, main crop figs form at the leaf nodes. My last post was about Black Bethlehem fig but since then I found out that it is not Black Bethlehem here are the pipictures
Anyway it's all good.I was moving fig trees in garage today, most of them are on wheeled pallets, a few are still outside, planning to roll them in tomorrow but still want to hose them down with full pressure on hose hand sprayer, do you do that ? Or are you using soap and oil solution to kill bugs that want to o er winter on trees ? I appreciate your input.

last yearI hose them off with hose pressure and let them dry before I move them in unheated
garage, garage is well installed.
I spray them with diluted Hydrogen peroxide or antibacterial detergent and oil solution or dust them with Diatomaceous earth powder I am scared of the fig bud mites.
All my figs are in garage as of yesterday, in ground fig bushes covered today, I wrapped each shoot with burlap pink insulation waight them to the ground covered with tar paper and on to thick cardboard. I wanted to pail it up with mulch, but couldn't buy what I wanted.
