Going crazy trying to decide on this island!
Comments (17)kaourika, GW isn't the greatest of sites for thoroughly modern designs. I'm not here much anymore but popped by today and saw your post and some of the follow-up posts and felt compelled to sign in and post. Ignore the suggestions to radically change the layout - your aesthetic is really quite wonderful. If those tall units are about 15-18" wide, you'll have a lot of storage in them. My pull-out pantry is either 15" or 18" wide and literally *all* my unrefrigerated storage is housed in it and with room to spare. You shouldn't be wanting for space. While I don't think plan-A is at all difficult, I love your plan-B. Rather than doing too much that's cute to make this work, I'd do one of only two things if you can - pull the island out a foot (if possible) so that the worst of that kink is 3' rather than 2' OR close it off altogether a la the first of your inspiration pictures - the ZeroEnergy Boston Architect's design. Yes the support beam will intersect the island if you pull it out but that's not the end of the world either and you might be able to make a feature of it in the bargain. In fact, if you do pull the island out, you could also do deeper cabinets on the sink side which I guarantee you will love. The one suggestion that might be a seriously worth a rethink is to switch oven and fridge. Otherwise, I think you have a magnificent layout. When does it come together? Can't wait to see it....See MoreContemplating some built-ins in my kitchen - wwyd?
Comments (19)Thanks everyone. Behind the columns is a hallway that is not very wide. I now have a farmhouse bench under the windows that I really like so I am not really keen on the idea of building shelves there. There are doorways on either end of that hallway area (perpendicular to the window wall) that only leave about 6" of depth between the doorway and the back wall where the windows are so the shelves could not run the whole length of the hallway unless they were only 6" deep. I thought about trying to put floor to ceiling shelves on either side of the windows but again, I have a depth problem with the doorways. I like the idea of putting the shelves at the base of the columns only, but I think they would be so low and small as to be not very useful. There is not a lot of total height to work with since the ceiling of the archway is lowered, and so the bases of the columns are only about 28" high -- with the baseboard and top trim, I think I'd only have room for one row of shelves. .And if I raise the bases, I worry that the proportions will be off and the columns will look squatty. I do like to browse the cookbooks but also do go looking for specific recipes. Plus I could really use the cabinet space that the cookbooks are taking up -- I've recently gone gluten-free while the rest of my family has not, which necessitates a whole new set of pantry staples (and a few new cookbooks LOL!) that I don't really have room to store so they have been sitting out on the counters - ugh! And I have pared down the cookbooks quite a bit already -- the ones that are left are all ones that I really love. I am thinking of trying to mock up some configurations with cardboard but that is going to take a while. I am in the middle of purging closets and cabinets so the kitchen is currently a disaster, which is why I can't take a newer pic. Daisychain - thanks for the compliments!...See MoreTwo Level island - going crazy!
Comments (6)I am sorry to have been away. Thank you for the encouragement. I know the lower level is the right answer. Stools are not for us, not now. I need to learn to love it. I am off-island for a while. Hopefully when I return, new elevations will have arrived, that I can share for specific feedback. Ninigret, both a table and an island will not fit in the space. Daisychain, we are putting the DW in the island, so it must be 36". There will also be a small prep sink....See Moredifferent height base cabinets. wall cabs not straight. crazy crown
Comments (21)Those look like very expensive cabinets being inset face frame and all the moldings. I think it looks great if it is your style that your business. I understand with wrapping cabinets it makes leveling or whatever word you want to call it difficult. Problem is sometimes you have to pick you visual doing that you want levels and to have the correct measurements. I agree that the counter to cabinet top should be it. If the counter is level then the measurement to the top of the cabs should also be level and the ceiling should not throw that off as the cabs were hung level then the moldings were added. I think you are correct in saying there is an issue at the point of measure. If your counter is level then 17" up from that should be level as it is parallel to the counter. If the ceiling is off it will effect the ceiling to cabinet top which again is parallel to the counter level. It should be off at the ceiling to crown measurements. You can go on Amazon and buy a laser level and tripod for about $150 and then will shoot a line across the entire room. You can start at counter height and work your way up to see where it is off. Picking a backsplash without a design that make this very visual will be difficult and the installer should have stopped and told you that. Hiding it and walking away for the next trade to deal with isn't professional. You have a valid concern it isn't an IKEA kitchen....See MoreDebbi Washburn
