Do you always park your vehicles in the garage?

We have only one car and I always put it in the garage. Recently my neighbor, who always parks in his driveway, had his gas tank drilled and emptied. We live in a nice area and I was shocked by the

“crime”.

I have a garage that is one part enclosed and the other half is a carport. I park under the carport. The enclosed half is used like a shed. Ive been cleaning it out lately.

It seems that very few park their car in the garage; even with double car garages, they're parked on the driveway. It's actually rare to see both vehicles in the garage. People use the garage for storage. Subdivisions are loaded with vehicles on the driveway and often one parked on the street. No street parking at all come December, so people will park it on the lawn.

When I did home sales, I'd always ask what colour the car was, because I'd often see it before the house number. Rarely did I get told that it would be in the garage.

Not gas being stolen here, but rampant thefts of catalytic converters. Even in garages and dealerships.

Me, I live in an apt bldg with a parking lot.

depends, 90% of the time shovels, pruners, mattock, other odd tools yes, sometimes shovel stays in my compost pile for a few days. Wheelbarrow is almost never away, I usually tip to the side. Hose, most of the time rolled away, but if its out for some reason and it starts to rain, it stays there till its dry. Plastic Buckets used for weeding and other stuff, never.. they stay out all year , they live in the garden I think.. I dont worry about them they were free from sams years ago, eventually the weather will wear them away, but not for quit awhile, then Ill throw them into the recycling bin. Silverkelt

Do you take your dog to a dog park to play?

    Q

    Comments (18)
To a dog park--no. The reasons listed in this post are all valid, and all boil down to one, really--irresponsible owners. But that's not the only reason I would avoid our local dog park. There's a bit of a unique side issue with the local one. Now, that being said, when DD used to raise Seeing eye puppies, we regularly had get-togethers with the other dogs--at our monthly meetings, at parties, fairs, parades, camping. Once a summer, we'd rent a fenced park (with a lake) for a picnic and we'd let the dogs run free and enjoy themselves. The big difference, though, was that these dogs were all up on all their shots, they were all well-socialized and knew each other and the humans, and we had 2 very well-educated leaders of the club who were able to handle any problems that arose. It was a lot of fun--for the puppies and their raisers.

"Tell me about Canada's environmental record insofar as the massive environmental damage caused by oil sand operations." Sure - if you want to start a new thread about it, I'd be happy to discuss it. Unlike the US, we don't shy away from the damage and mistakes that we make, nor about the political controversy about it. We could also discuss our proportional reliance on renewable and nuclear energy if you like. "In the US, such decisions are and have always been local, at the city and town level. There is no "national" policy nor would our laws allow one." That's too narrow an interpretation about what I said, and I never mentioned laws or policies. Again, you're putting your bias into what I said, rather than actually reading what I said. (But, if you do you want to talk zoning laws and policies, that would be an economic and racial injustice discussion, not an environmental discussion.) Actually, what I meant was really the absence of laws or policies, and the abundance of lobbying and marketing. The auto and energy companies wanted those broad, laid out roads and suburbs; they just convinced the governments that was what they needed.

We've always maximized parking in the garage. Prior house, that mean space for four vehicles (2 and 2, so not convenient but do-able). This house, only one space -- so the car gets the garage, the truck parks in the driveway.

Our neighborhood was built mostly in the 1930s, '40s and '50s so the typical garage (like ours) is small and set behind the house. Most are more conducive to garden storage than to fitting a modern car. About half the houses driveways are only big enough for one car, so many people must park their second vehicle in the street.

Yes, parked inside the garage. The garage floor is heated. The cars are warm when you get into them. The parking spaces are wide....plenty of room between vehicles.

It makes me twitchy to see all our neighbors' garages full of crap, with their cars parked on the street or in their very short driveways. Our houses all have attics AND basements. There's really no need to put everything in the garage.

Never. We have had up to four cars, all parked in our driveway.

When we first moved here a neighbor gave us good advice about the driveway. With 2 children being future drivers, wev would need a double driveway.

Fast forward and now if you have a single car garage, you can only have that size driveway.

DH has shelves with all his tools.

We actually used footage from the back of the garage and created an ensuite bathroom setup for our extra downstairs bedroom.

We have a double garage in our Floruda house and just park in the driveway there as well.

We have an oversized 2 car attached garage and keep our ONE sedan in it. We've had as many as four cars at once when we had only a normal 2-car garage. DS's beater was left on the driveway and my Healey was in a widower neighbor's otherwise vacant garage stall. Looking at old budgets, I wince at the money we spent on cars and the insurance for them. We sold a second car after DH retired. I was dusting it more often than it was driven -- saved a bundle on insurance.

After my first apartment, I have always had a carport or garage at an apartment, condo, townhouse, and house. Carport, at least, keeps the snow and ice off the car, and the sun/heat besides. And it usually is assigned, so there is no doubt whoever is nosing about the car doesn’t belong there.

In Cathedral City, we have a two-car garage, and so we can both park in the garage and then enter the house from there. The point is to keep the vehicles out of the heat - it is never cold there. Everyone there uses their garage because no one wants to get into a searing hot car, although in the winter, the weather is mild and pleasant.

In Los Angeles, our garage is used for storage - mostly tools, many of them for gardening, and we have an extra refrigerator there as well. We have our bikes hanging from rafters, and we have excess paintings hanging on the garage walls and stacked against one of the walls. Kevin parks his pickup in the driveway, and I park my small car on the street. Security is not a concern for either of our houses.

We have a 2-car garage and 2 cars are parked in it. When we acquired the MX-5 DH bought a cover for it so it is usually parked outside. Occasionally it is inside, especially when we are getting ready to use it for a few days and his truck gets moved outside. We do rotate driving all 3 fairly often.

"I find it interesting that some people think they're immune from crime because of where they live."

If this refers to me, I didn't say I was immune. I said it wasn't a concern. I've spent the past 30 years in a neighborhood with security measures in place and a homeowners association that sends out a quarterly newsletter. I can't remember the last time there was a burglary reported, perhaps not in the last 5 years. The rare incidents with a parked car, often just a few each year, usually involve vandalism and often suggest youths to be responsible.

This is why I said that security is not a concern. Should I believe otherwise?

Yes, since we have lived in CA for the last 45 years. Not so much for security reasons but to protect the paint job and keep them clean. It also keeps the car cool. We have a 2 car garage with an attached add on that we built. It is the size of a 2 car garage, but it is a wookshop with a 1 car stall. DH wanted it to work on the old cars he had collected. All gone now except for the restored 1955 Chevy truck, which is kept there. Never used garages as added storage.

We always park the cars in the garages. Mine was built extra large to have room for a workshop with a spare refrigerator. Sometimes when I need more space with my home projects the cars are parked in front of it for a few days, and they’re 50’ away from the street behind the house gates so there is not much of security concerns. People in my neighborhood do not park cars along the streets. In good weather, people are outside pushing baby strollers, walking with their dogs, and jogging.

Home security is not a big concern for me either. I live in a area with a very low rate of crime. Also, I live in a very private neighborhood on a private road that is the culmination of another private road :-)) No one is out and about after dark that doesn't have a reason to be there. Street lights in this semi-rural area are rare and it is black-hole-of-Calcutta dark at night so we have motion detector lights in various places around the house to light the way and discourage any potential trespassers!

I always park inside, DH does not.

Our two car garage has two auto car doors, and is separated down the middle with a floor to ceiling wall of cabinets and shelves. There is man door inside to access either side.

I became keeper of the painting supplies, some gardening things (don't touch or move my felcos), the Costco overflow.

His side (heated, mine is not) is loaded with spare frig, a work bench, and all his clutter. His folding table and electric skillets for his clam frying. Since Covid, also a bar - and he entertains there (chairs, bistro tables). Lots of heavier gardening things that are not gas powered, those are in the garden building not connected to the house - garage is attached. His bicycle, couple of hand trucks, stacks of clean worn towels for his car washing and projects, many buckets.

I don't know if his truck would fit even if his half was cleaned and empty, I've never seen him try. It's parked directly in front of his bay but outside and under a spot light. No one has ever touched it. Parking isn't an issue, we have a circular drive that could fit many cars.

I do, except for the last month and probably at least three more weeks, maybe a little more due to some renovations. My husband's side of the garage is filled with stuff-junk that I would throw out but he is a hoarder, so... he parks in the driveway. He also has a work area at the back of the garage that has stuff we just couldn't possibly get rid of! I have a corner on my side for gardening supplies. Sheesh.

I keep mine in the garage for the same reasons as Uptown Gal. It stays cleaner, no snow to clean off in winter, warmer, and the driveway is clearer.

My truck doesn't fit in our garage. It's parked in the driveway. It has an alarm system, which is pretty sensitive (kids kickball hit the side and the alarm went off and DON'T try opening a door without disarming.) The alarm would wake the dead. And it's horribly loud and annoying and because of a previous electrical issue I haven't gotten fixed, I have to put the key in the ignition to turn the alarm off. So, DON'T Touch MY truck!

I have two vehicles and one garage--actually a carport alongside an outbuilding. So the older one is always out in the open. My concerns are not theft or vandalism, but sunlight and trees--sunlight because of its effect on a car's paint, and trees because no matter where I park the car, leaves blow onto it and collect in the well by the windshield wipers. At one point they clogged up the A/C system.

Not in the garage. It's not in the best shape anymore. But sometimes in the pole barn. During the winter when we get snows the car gets put inside so the drives can get cleared. Otherwise our house is pretty far off the road and with the trees you usually can't see the car parked up by the house. The truck lives in the barn out back when it's not in use.

When I first bought my house I did park my one car and my one bike in my one car garage - but I was so busy with work, housework, and child rearing that I didn't do much more to the yard than keep it within reason, so I didn't have many yard tools beyond a mower, snow shovel, rake, and a hedge trimmer. But, over the years I have accumulated things like ladders, shelving for hand tools, shovels, flower pots, fertilizers, hoses, stakes, yard cart, more bikes.... patio chairs and two potted fig trees that overwinter in there. So, now the car is never in the garage and hasn't been for decades.

We have had a problem with cars being rifled through regularly for years. The entire neighborhood was built with only one car garages, but most homes have at least 2 cars. The solution for me is to never ever ever leave anything, not even a couple of quarters, in the car, even though it is locked. We have had a few catalytic converter thefts in the neighborhood too, but since the police busted up 2 large theft rings, I haven't heard of another incident. I am sure that it is only a matter of time, though.

“If it was a U turn, there is plenty room in front of the gates near the street, there is no need to drive into our property.”

We went through something very similar. A guy in a pickup truck would use our circular driveway instead of making a U turn. He would just cruise through the driveway like he lived here. Our house is also set back from the street, so using our driveway was pretty invasive no matter what. I finally got a license number and it stopped after I contacted the police. NO, absolutely no reason to drive through private property!
