We made the same error as you did with similar results. But, I learned a valuable lesson. Lesson learned? Always finish the job b/c it's very difficult to find and match materials later. Our engineered hw was very similar to yours. We stopped at practically the same place, I convinced myself that carpet in the living/dining room was just fine (and mine was better than yours--no offence). After 2 years, all I could focus on, was getting rid of that old carpet and why didn't we put hw everywhere when we had the chance. In the end, I pursued relentlessly until I found the last of our flooring at a discount flooring store in California. We are in Canada and thankfully it all worked out. Our old installer was able to lift up some of the adjoining floor boards and fully integrate the new material. No one and I mean no one believes it was done 2 years apart, but we were very lucky. The dye lots were a good match and the width of the boards were exact. But I will repeat-----don't do this! Always finish the job, or at the very least, purchase the material and store it until you can finish the job.

Sigh...another partial floor renovation with a man-made product. I'm sorry you have to learn this the hard way. Man-made products like laminate, vinyl, engineered hardwood, factory finished hardwood, etc have a shelf-life of (roughly) 24 months. Once they have had their day, they disappear forever. The big manufacturers need to stay on trend so that customers can find what they want RIGHT NOW! If the manufacturers let their lines go stale they lose out on millions of dollars worth of sales each month. It's how they renew themselves when they sell products that can 'live' for 25 years. So what to do? Not much. You will either move to something completely different, or start over. If it has been more than 2 years since you installed your floor, you will be hard pressed to find enough of the product to satisfy a medium sized renovation (200sf) let alone 'the rest of the house'. I have been living with the acorn color for two weeks now on my second floor. I am more traditional, like you are. The floor installer said he liked working with this product and the quality was excellent. It looks very nice and it is comfortable underfoot, easy to clean and doesn’t show dirt. The only thing that surprised me was that the actual product out of the box looks darker than the sample, but I do still like it.

Wide-plank flooring is on-trend, though I hesitate to use the word trend because real antique wood floors typically have wide planks. (No one was milling uniform 2- or 3-inch flooring in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.) It's really more the amount of variation in the wood color and grain that's giving the second floor a busy look. Some species of wood are just busier than others, for example hickory has a lot more color range and more mineral streaks, knots etc. than a wood like birch.
