Donna, so here's my take on the ending of The Anomaly, understanding that I'm a literal sort of person and always go for the obvious answers. :) SPOILER FOR THE ANOMALY SPOILER FOR THE ANOMALY SPOILER FOR THE ANOMALY SPOILER FOR THE ANOMALY I concluded that the decision to shoot down the second emergence of the plane precipitated the end of the simulation. I didn't honestly take the speculation that our world is purely a simulation/test run seriously when it came up earlier in the book, and I didn't consider it an essential part of the novel, so I was shocked at the ending. (I also thought the calligram was a great artifice, and that the translator did just a great job with it.) I thought the themes of the novel were really more about responding to adversity, the unknown, and second chances. I remember my first reaction to the second emergence was pity for the pilot's wife, who would have to watch her husband die for the third time, and wondering if she would in fact stay with him or walk away to save herself. In other words, I focused on the passengers and how they handled their situations, rather than why/how the situation occurred. Your thoughts???

Just finished Tomorrow will be a Good Day by Captain Sir Tom Moore (although he wasn't a 'Sir' when he wrote it as he was knighted by the late Queen after the book was written) He came to prominence during the Covid crisis when he raised a huge amount of money for an NHS charity (approx. £32 million in, I believe less than a month) by walking 'laps' around his garden . . . at the age of one hundred, having recently broken his hip. The book follows what appears an 'ordinary' life. Brought up in Yorkshire with a keen interest in things 'mechanical' (cars motor bikes etc) which stood him in good stead during WWII where he served in a Tank Regiment out in India and Burma. Perhaps the most difficult aspects of his long life was his first marriage to a woman who would never let him touch her. A psychiatrist so-called helped her by getting her to run-away with him . .. a happier second marriage followed but this woman also developed serious mental-health problems. Last night I watched Conclave for the second time and it was better than the first. It all made a lot more sense to me. Anyway, following that I needed something on a par with it, and watched the final episode of The Mirror and the Light on PBS. It was sad for me because I liked Cromwell as he was portrayed by Mantel. His 3rd degrees with Norfolk, Gardiner, Rich, and Call-Me were brilliant. He was so much smarter than all of them put together. It was truly gallows humor.
