Oddly shaped family room

My family room is oddly shaped. The main part of the space is fine (1st pic) but I'm unsure how to bring in this other space and make the room look cohesive. That closet we use for kids books, school supplies, etc. How should I decorate that space. It's been ugly for the past 2 years.

Depending on your budget, I would replace the couch set with a sectional. It's much more economical with space. Maybe also think about trying to get more natural light in the space? I feel like better lighting can improve the room's look and mood as well.

I am going to disagree (with a smile) that the main part (or any part) is fine. Furniture is too large, to begin with, and, the sofa and fireplace/tv are too close. How wide is the room? What is the black next to the fireplace?

It seems odd that all the suggestions have most or all of the seating with its back to the TV and/or the windows. I dunno, but I think I'd put the couch as in your first photo, and add a couple of chairs in that same zone = TV room. Then put a small cluster of chairs at the other end of the room as a conversational grouping (around a table) with the option to look out the windows or enjoy the fireplace.

The stove is gas and we've never used it. I would love to tear out all the brickwork but the original chimney is walled off behind it so it would be a huge, expensive project if it's even structurally feasible. This house has a lot of projects and the main level is my priority so the wet bar will have to wait even though it would be great to have that done. Maybe I can find a slide to attach to the wet bar...they climb on it anyway...and then put the climber on the back deck if it will fit. My boys play outside a ton when we have snow, but 2/3 of the winter we have no snow and apparently it's not so much fun to play outside when it's cold, windy, and dry. We did have the room open for a playroom when we first moved in but then DH insisted on getting that sectional. I would have preferred just a couch and more open space. Maybe if I split the sectional up I can make the room more open again.

Can you take a photo of the wall that has the stairs…the one people believe will be able to accommodate a huge TV for your family? This is a young family who has tried to create some storage for their young children by building the storage beside the fireplace. Perhaps you can add an additional shelf area above the book shelves that have been created, as Beverly has suggested? But, that said, it isn’t necessary to do so. The idea of a long sofa against the bay window is a lovely one. A large open area with a few chairs (swivel), an ottoman coffee table, space for children to play…. Imperatives for a young family!

IMO, if you remove the storage bench under the window and remove the quilt rack, you could angle the couch to face the TV and might have room for the leather chair in that conversation area and have ample angled access to the dining room. You could put the area rug in that area. And then a couple of chairs and a lamp table in the area across from the front entrance. And declutter as much as you can.

Where theloveseat is, I would put a bookcase or two. In the corner to the left of the door, try either a comfy arm chair and small table for a reading corner, a desk or writing table, or a small table and two chairs for craft projects, etc. You could also consider a computer station there.

@judianna20 yes the furniture has to go. We use to have that sofa in front of the windows so it worked better size wise. We are in the process of getting new furniture but want to know how to configure first.

@rahter... Here is another view of the room maybe I should move the desk to the corner on the other wall. Bookcases won't really be functional because that closet is filled with books.
