Lighting Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Lighting for primary bath

We are planning a remodel of our primary bath. The link below is similar to what we have in mind. We will have a 72" vanity with 2 sinks. I would like to have a double sconce between 2 recessed medicine cabinets. We do not have space on the sides for sconces.

I want to make sure we have enough lighting in general for the room and for task ligthing at the vanity. We are planning recessed lighting for overall lighting in the room. I'm concerned the double sconce in the middle and recessed light behind us when standing in the vanity will cause shadows. My designer thinks it will be enough. I would love if that's the case but not sure. I don't want to get everything installed and regret it later.

What do you think about 2 or even 4 small taks can lights above the sinks? Would that work? Any other suggestions?

I think the arrangement your designer suggests should will be good, but with any lights the amount of lightbulb kelvins will determine light output. Consider getting the brightest possible for bulbs (3000-4000) and have dimmer switches for both overhead and sconce lighting. Not sure of your bath layout but you could have 2 recessed lights above vanities and another two that would be behind you somewhat when standing there, would help remove shadows.

I never bother with dimmers in a bathroom I usualy do 2 switches one for the task lighting above the vanity and one for the overhead pot lights I just leave the task light off when I want to have a bit more softness while I have a bath. I like 4000K lEDs in both batjhrooms and kitchens they have no yellow undertone like 3000K does and IMO both these spaces need to be lit like operating rooms ( I amjoking a bit) since both require good lighting to perform tasks .

When I started out it was a full wainscotting on the one wall. It may have devolved into individual backsplashes, yes. There are only TWO tiles being used in this photoshop. I was just pondering using the matching upright bricks up the back wall give me the textured horizontal stripe across the back wall highlighted with a hidden strip light source in the ceiling. It may not look like it but the bathroom is 22' x 7.5' with 9.5' ceilings. The light will be installed after inspection.

As @Lyndee Lee pointed out, these mirrors produce 300 lumens, which is the equivalent of only a 40 watt bulb. These are meant for accent lighting, not task lighting. For both baths, I recommend additional sconce lighting. Also, a Solatube is great for the daytime, but at night, the shower will be dark. I recommend additional recessed lighting in the shower. In general, for very good vanity lighting, I prefer sconces flanking a mirror instead of lighting placed above. I aim for over 2000 lumens total per mirror (dimmable) and a color temp of at least 3000k (the mirrors are 2700k).

Thanks for the questions Fori. 1) It's possible to move the pocket door opening left or right up to 4 inches 2) The original layout is below. The shower was enclosed with tiled wall with a 20 inch glass door. The room received minimal light from the window. We never used the small secondary sink behind the shower because it was a dark and tight space. I did not enjoy reaching over the toilet to access items in the wall cabinet. 3. We don't *need* double sinks. My husband and I are on different schedules, and even if we were needing the sink at the same time we would wait or use together. The other bathroom is only a few feet away with one sink. My only concern is resale and it's 50/50 on preferences for single vs double sink. 4. Thanks for this reminder!

@shirleybear7 We’re very happy with it! It’s been several months now and it looks good as new, no complaints. I recommended them to my mom who just remodeled her primary bath as well, and hers just got installed this week. The only thing I’d say, which I told her as well, is that the freight co. will only deliver to the end of your driveway, so you want to make sure you have a couple strong people on hand for delivery day because they’re heavy as heck, especially with the countertop (boxed separately) secured to the top.
