Calamondin plant isn’t blooming.

I grow 2 calmondin plants in a pot.

The one I got from a local garden center blooms and bears fruits with no issues, bloomed April and now I see flower buds(1st pic).

The second one is my issue. This was started from seed and this plant is about 5 years old now (2nd pic).

This plant always looked lush but has never bloomed for me. Both plants get bloom booster early spring. Both have the same pot size and soil quality. They get watered at the same time. My question is: how can I encourage the 2nd plant to bloom?

Its a beautiful calamondin. There’s nothing wrong with it - seed grown citrus takes years to reach a blooming age. Dont prune it until it reaches it. Not sure what year that will be, i’ve read some who say they have gone from seed to fruit in only 3 years, and ive read some who have much older ones which havent bloomed yet. I’d say since its 5 years old that it is closer to sooner than later. i dont know if there is a way to speed it up. Your tree looks very healthy.

What you don't want to do is pot the plant where the level of the media is too high to the crown of the plant. The crown of the plant must remain above the potting media, whichever potting media you choose. (If growing in moss, I would grow in a clay pot, by the way. For bark, I prefer the plastic pot.) Never allow water to collect in the crown of the plant: you'll get crown rot. Up the humidity for the plant if the plant has few roots. Don't overpot the plant either. If there are few roots on the plant, then keep to somewhat small diameter pot.

I wasnt going to respond to this post, as im not positive of the answer. But I noticed that no one else had any ideas. You cant NOT have your question answered! So ill try to help if I can. (Do you maybe mean Centranthus RUBER?) Ive been growing this plant for six years now, but im afraid im not really sure whats going on with yours. Plants will often do things that confound us, and that we simply cannot explain. There are three posible things I can think of that may be causing your problem First is that it may not care for the spot its planted in; good drainage is esential for this plant. The second is that it might have had a hard winter. I find NOT mulching in the fall often helps. The mulch will keep the moisture in and make the plants center rot out. I mulched my first Centranthus in the fall and it died over the winter because of it. Third possibility is that it's at the end of its life. Centranthus are rather short lived plants in general. Mine have reseeded a lot so that theres always new babies comming up to fill in over any that happen to die. Hope this helps you! CMK

indigo (indigofera), passiflora incarnata, echinacea, great blue lobelia, hydrangea 'Limelight', Japanese anemone 'Windflower', nepeta, calamenthe, scarlet runner beans, aster 'Ghengis Khan' (this false aster blooms non-stop from early summer until frost as long as I keep shearing spent blooms), roses: 'Pilgrim', 'Tradescant', 'Peggy Martin', glossy abelia (hummingbird & butterfly magnet). Monarda is starting its second flush. Garden phlox 'David' and 'Franz Schubert' are looking awfully tired after all the heat, but still a little bloom coming. Salvias should be on second flush, but I cut them back late. Hosta 'Guacamole' should be blooming now, but is a bit too shaded this year as the magnolia has grown ... time to move it. Chelone 'Hot Lips' and sedum 'Autumn Joy' will soon be in bloom. In dappled shade, fern-leaf bleeding heart (dicentra eximia) is putting out new leaves and will soon have its second flush of bloom. All of the above are pink, lavender to blue, or white, with the exception of roses 'Pilgrim' (pale yellow) and 'Tradescant' (deep red), monarda (red), and the scarlet runner beans which are, of course, scarlet. I don't have one, but I see that the crape myrtles around here are all still blooming vigorously.

Just be glad you weren't trying to get orange or grapefruit to bear from seed. Those can take 10 to 20 years or more! This long juvenile period in citrus is one reason why most are grafted or rooted from mature cuttings.

I grew a calamondin from seed (in-ground) and it was 16-20ft tall before it began blooming. It took probably close to ten years....maybe a few over that. If my tree was any indicator, you may not have enough root space in a pot for your tree to reach fruiting stage. Fruiting maturity is measured by how many leaf nodes a tree has, not by how old the tree is. Your nursery tree was made by cutting a branch off of a tree that had reached fruiting maturity and grafting that mature wood on some kind of root stock.
