Is it worth fixing the Honda HR214?

Hello,I have a Honda HR214 lawn mower that was purchased in the early 80s. The self propel no longer works on it. I brought it into a Honda Service center and they are stating that the transmission needs to be replaced, among other issues. The total cost for the repair and tune up would be $700.00. I see a new Honda HRN216VLA is going for $619. So, is it worth repairing the HR214? I heard they don't make the new ones like this model anymore, so not sure what to do.

Personally it's not worth the expense and you should by a new mower. With that said I searched for the complete transmission assembly and it is no longer available, so I don't know where they're getting a complete transmission. Most of the individual parts inside the transmission are still available, so are they rebuilding the transmission and the reason it's so expensive? Maybe the did something simple to fix it and quoted you a new transmission just to get you to buy a new mower, it happens more than you think so beware.

Buy a new mower and then browse the internet for someone selling a used complete transmission like ebay and at your leisure replace the assembly yourself. It's not that hard if you are handy.

What you do depends on how much spare time you have, and are you mechanically inclined. If you are tear the transmission apart, and you may find there is something simple that can be fixed or replaced. Then you can use the tractor for many years to come. If you can find nothing it will be easier to put the parts in the trash bin.

On the other hand many stores are having sales on their tractors. Also some manufacturer are getting ready to change to change their lines, and giving deep mark downs on the old units.

The local authorized JD deal had the part, so it was just a matter of picking them up. The the old tractor probably could have been repair if I spent the time and money. All Things consider, I replaced it.

Two years ago I got a great deal on my new John Deere when the local Lowes has a great sale. My 20 year old JD was reaching the point where there were many little things wearing out. The 20 year old tires were the biggest thing that was going to need replacing.

So if your yard can wait while you work on it try to fix it. If not look for a good sale on a new tractor

Your seller is playing fast and loose with the facts. HR214 (2 speed) was last made in 1989 or 1990. That's more like 20 years old. Also fitted with 4hp GXV-120 engine. Masters and Harmony models (HR-215, HRA-215, HRM-215) came out in 1989 and had 5hp GXV-140 engine and 3 speed transmission or hydrostatic. It's a good mower, but 20+ years and only 4hp; I couldn't sell it for more than $75 or maybe $100 if exceptionally clean.

The only real fix would be remove the engine and replace the gasket. It is a fairly involved job on that mower, probably not worth worrying about. Watch your oil level, if the leak gets worse you will have to decide whether the old beast is worth spending time and money on. If it were mine, I would fix it. I have the later HR215, best mower I have ever owned.

'I also acquired a HR214 SX and it smokes like crazy. I checked the oil and it looks clean but way overfilled. Is the appropriate amount of motor oil 20 ounces? I suspect the previous owner dumped a quart in it. Sounds like draining from teh filler spout might be the ticket. Any other advice?' 20 oz is a little too much in most Honda LM engines. I didn't know this when I posted '20 oz' above. 18.5 is the usual Honda fill, so 20 oz really shouldn't cause any problems. Anytime you encounter a high oil situation, you have to give it the smell test to see if it's saturated with gas, which indicates a carb problem. If the smell test is inconclusive, put a small amount of the oil in a good stout container and try to light it off - if there's enough gas in it to burn, you are flooding the crankcase with fuel. Otherwise just dump the excess out and make it right on the dipstick or mark in the filler tube, whichever applies. Alternatively, dump it all out and refill with the correct amount.

New mowers are complete POS compared to older mowers. I typically expect to get a new mower every 4 or so years. They break. I don't have the time or patience to figure it out. And in the mean time, the lawn needs mowing. So, I put in a request for recycling pickup and go to HD and buy whatever is on sale. Never spend too much because whatever I get will break in a few years. I'm an ideal consumer for lawn mower companies.
