I have an ugly hall suggestions needed pleeeeeze!
Comments (21)My hallway has the same doors. Although it is half the size, we must both live in a 50's era home. The hallway is almost a small room of it's own that is the opening to bath and bedrooms. At first I was going to change the doors drawers with new shaker fronts. They still sit in the garage. After thinking about it, new doors felt like they would clutter the area. Plus the drawer fronts would be a real problem replacing without destroying the front. Currently I have cup pulls on the drawers and "close to the door" fitting closet door handles. Drop handles work well and come in so many designs. You can take the hinges and boil them in water to remove paint and/or spray after to match whatever color is wanted. I found some old original art deco ones which are still in their original packaging. Simple and work well. I don't know if the original owner framed my units or was an add-on. Small framing painted the same as doors around each unit of doors/drawers. Not on the panels. It works well and finishes off the flatness of all. Trim and doors, baseboard are white, walls are same as yours. At one time I also considered sanding the edge of each door. There has to be number of layers on them. A good light sanding would help revive. My cupboards are wonderfully deep, they take up part of bedroom closets behind them. Bottom line for me is to embrace them and refurbish just a bit for cleaner lines. At some point my entire house was painted a robin egg blue. Everything.....walls, doors, windows. Once in a while I will have a small chip and there is the blue underneath. I would love to see old pics of this and the decor involved....See MoreDo I really need roof vents / venting ?
Comments (6)If you live up north maybe and maybe not. If the house has lasted that long with out any ice daming and roof rot I'd not be too concerned. I lived in a house that was built back in 1826 in Ct and it had no roof vents at all. There was never any kind of rot at all. We just opened the windows all summer and it was fine. I now live in Florida and have 2 solar vents in the roof and two 120v fans on either end of the gables one pulling air in and one out. I have no eve vents and I have insulation right up to the eves. This house has been here since 1923 and with all my improvements it should last till the next ice age. Your biggest concern is ice daming and eve rot from snow build up. If you have this problem you might wish to fix the problem but if not save your money...See MoreShould we open the wall to the hallway?
Comments (28)I love the view from your patio door. It was suggested by an interior designer that I hired to close off an entrance for more wall space, forcing traffic through the kitchen to get to the living room. Instead, I switched my dining furniture with the living room furniture so that I have more space for the area I used most and which had the nicest view- I have one long room for both similar to your config. That closet might have been added when the kitchen entrance was closed. I think the doorway to the living room would be much better where the closet is now - giving you more wall space for the TV. If you could redo the entry way I would think about making a built-in wardrobe where the living room entrance is now to give you space for coats etc.- if workable take a few inches from the back of the wardrobe to have a inset for the TV and other components. Move the entrance to the living room to the end by the front door. That would allow you to move sofa and loveseat down and allow more space to dining. If possible have the new opening to the kitchen with a view framing the left side of the patio slider - for a few extra inches to the wall with the stove. I understand that it would be very costly, if opening that wall means you have to monkey with flooring it might be worth fixing the closet....See MoreWhat lighting should be used in congested hallway?
Comments (3)A simple flush mounted light would allow easy access into the attic, plus nearly disappear visually (to not compete with the style of your other light fixtures). https://www.kichler.com/kichler/products/indoor-lighting/flush-mount-lights/flush-mount-ceiling-lights/ceiling-space-11-inch-led-flush-mount-wht/...See Moreelcieg
