For all you gardener's in hot, humid climates
Comments (21)Well, I just looked at the weather. We had like 4 days of rain predicted yesterday...and now one on Friday IF WE ARE LUCKY and then not again until next Wednesday. All week, temps in the 100's AGAIN. This is 3 weeks straight and it is nuts. I am not kidding when I say my garden is almost dead. When it rains I will be terrified trees will fall on the houses. It is really sad here. It is UNBEARABLE outside. Sorry to whine and complain but I feel like I need to begin planting saguaro cactus. Even YUCCA is drooping...and we can't water until Sunday. I don't think the climbing aster is going to resurect, the butterfly bush is almost gone...roses are flowering in protest but the flowers are paper dust when they open... Nothing else is blooming, almost everywhere there is a perennial or annual it is bare dirt now. GGG...See MoreIpe Deck and Cedar Posts and Rails - Help!
Comments (20)When I hear of someone using cedar for railing, I feel I must tell them of my experience.18 years ago the popular belief( at least at my lumberyard) was that cedar was low maintainence and lasts forever. So I sided, trimmed, railed and decked w/ cedar( white cedarsiding, red cedar everywhere else). It was beautiful afterward. We stained w/cabots, used sikins on the deck. After 5 years we noticed, especially the deck and rail, that everywhere cedar touched cedar( the butt joint at the post/ rail and post /deck) it was getting soft. We hadn't sealed the end grain before installation nor did we caulk each joint. By year 12 the railings fell off and the posts and decking boards rotted along each edge ( we didn't space the deck boards enough, thinking they would shrink- they might have even expanded). A word to the wise, wait until a stretch of dry weather and silicone caulk those joints. Fine Homebuilding Magazine recognized this problem and published an article a few years after we built and after the damage was done. They recommended geotextiles layered between built up trim and cutting chamfer grouves at the butt joints for the caulk to adhere better- esentially a miniture pitch pocket for the caulk. Good luck w/ the cedar....See Moreroses on clay vs sand in hot climates and cold climates
Comments (51)Came back to this thread to check on Comte de Chambord, yes, Val grows it, and I agree that needs loamy soil, lots of rain, and healthier if alkaline. Comte is rooting easily in my wet baggie, and rooted easily in heavy out-door rain, while other cuttings rot. Comte has aggressive root and can root easily in alkaline sand, but I need to make my rooting-medium more acidic for the cuttings which are harder to root. Pink Pet definitely likes dry/loamy soil and warmer climate (Val's pic. is awesome). But died in my soaking wet clay last winter....See MoreEden in humid hot blackspot area
Comments (55)@Carla English , There are many ways to treat/prevent BS. Are you in south with humidity all growing season or North East-NY or NJ or other state w/ some humidity only oart of growing season? Makes a difference how to treat it best oer your location. How old is Pretty n Pink rose? Climbers bloom more in 3rd year if in “full sun—6-10 hrs,” Edens can have hundreds of blooms 3rd year!!! First year maybe few blooms, second year maybe 20-30 blooms. Rebloom more on 3rd year. I have 2 Edens. One in 10+ hrs sun-hundreds blooms 3rd year. 2nd Eden in less sun-got BS…. May move to sunnier spot. They are my favorite blooms of all my roses……June they put on the biggest display blooming all month… then few blooms off/on all summer. So soectacular June-I wouldnt miss it for the world! In NY Fingerlakes area, I have humidity/tons rain,, end of summer mainly Aug-Sept & if I remove lower leaves near ground about 6” up stem, it sonetimes avoids getting BS started. Also, I plant roses far apart from touching other roses or plants so air can circulate-jeep leaves dry, so BS wont get started. Keep them prumed if touch any other plants. Water on ground roots, not leaves of roses. Try keep leaves dry. Plant roses in sunniest spots if property 6hrs and more sunlight. Shady roses can get BS. Spray if BS starts regularly. It can stunt or stop BS altogether. You will loose less leaves/rose stays healthier. American Tose Society suggests most effect sprays on leaves.. Make sure you plant roses in soil that drains well. If soil is soggy wet-dig up soil & replace with areating healthy soil that drains well. Clay really retains water-soaking rose toots-causing BS. Improve clay soil by adding Espoma or organic soils/compost. If one rose gets BS it can spread to other roses anywhere… Nip it first signs…. try little of all above ideas and may orevent it spreading. Sonetimes it not the rose but the way you’re caring for it. Hope these ideas help with your Eden Pretty n.Pink rose Kordes roses & I have a list of roses that do well in humidity if you need ideas. MY EDEN, 2022, 3rd year, beginning of June blooms. 2022, 2nd year favorite blooms:...See MoreMaureen
