Help identifying blackberry looking plant

last year

Hello, about 6 months ago I noticed this blackberry looking plant pop up in relatively dry soil. I kept it and watered every now and then and it has taken off extremly well. However i have yet to get any flowers or fruit, so now I am wondering… is this truly a blackberry?

Well, it is certainly a Rubus. But there are many species, subspecies and hybrids, so saying exactly what you have is impossible. You will know the quality of the fruit next year.

Yes, for blackberry no blooms or fruit until next year. This would be remarkable 6-month Rubus growth from a seed, perhaps a chunk of root ended up in your soil, or a blackberry plant was removed from there in recent years.

Unfortunately, the same blackberry plant can have both pink and white flowers, so that's probably not an identifying attribute. Other attributes to consider: (1) thorny / thornless, (2) erect vs semi-erect (e.g. somewhat trailing), (3) timing of blooms and fruit ripening, (4) formation of the flower cluster, and (5) shape and size of fruit. Let us know what you find out.

probably came from a nearby bird feeder ... and that was why.. back in the day.. i moved my feeders to be over the cement driveway ... rather than all the seed falling in the garden ... ken
