It should be installed on the mains side of the sprinkler, as close to it as reasonably possible. If it's on the wrong side it won't do anything. Good luck.

You could always call them directly and ask for advice. I've had one for years now with a medium-large sized back yard and I swear by them. There's no way I'd be able to water my lawn and keep my sanity without something like this or moving to a more complex irrigation system. I've even "enhanced" my unit by drilling additional holes in the arms which provides a much more even watering then how the unit comes from the factory.

Hi, If you happen to have the Rainbird 1800 series pop-up heads, then the item you need is called ''RainBird Replacement Cover/Seal Assembly for 1800 Models'' and the Rainbird part number is 116901. You can buy these on-line from Rainbird for $2.30 each, or you can find them at many other on-line retailers. I have not had any luck finding them from Lowes or Home Depot either in their stores or on-line. I am truly lazy when it comes to flower seeds. In fact this is the first year in a long time that I have bothered to start seeds indoors and the only reason I have is because of how long this cold has lasted. What I usually do is take handfuls of seeds that I collected the previous year and just throw them into the area of the garden that I want them to grow. If they come up great if not then it wasn't meant to be. I don't pull back the mulch or anything. I'm so lazy that I should be ashamed of myself. LOL Strangely enough I have had some success with this method. The seeds that almost always sprout are common orange cosmos (for some reason the pink has more trouble), yellow buttercup, butterfly weed (I have more problems getting this to stop sprouting!), rain lily, crossandra, gloriosa lily, phillipine violet, and profusion zinnia. Of course, most of the plants I just listed are more then willing to reseed themselves without any help from me.
