Fine line Buckthorn - Size?
Comments (10)If anyone is still checking this, I have 2 of these that are about 10 years old around my patio. One is roughly 8 feet tall by 1.5 to 2 feet wide. The other got smothered under the top 20' of a fallen white pine 2 years ago, but recovered nicely and is about 7 feet tall with the same 1.5 to 2 foot width. I'm in Michigan zone 5a, they get about 6 hours of direct sun a day. I think they are beautiful shrubs, narrow compact habit with feathery foliage and a perfect patio screen....See MoreHas anyone heard of buckthorn 'fine line' (rhamnus frangula)?
Comments (4)Rhamnus frangula (syn: R. anlus), and especially Rhamnus cathartica, are one of the bad, bad forest invasives in the U.S. Although we have a big problem with R.cathartica in Minnesota and I see it here in the woods literally all the time, I myself have never seen frangula in the woods. This, even though its ornamental cultivar, 'Columnaris', use to be commonly planted until, say, 10 years ago; and I have almost never seen R. cathartica sold. However Columnaris is frugal in seed production. Probably every state in the eastern half of the U.S. has its own invasive buckthorn fact sheets. This is Minnesota's. With this caveat out of the way, now to your question. Two years ago, I did pick a cheap 1 gallon Ron Williams (Fine LineÂ), just to see what it is like and test its seedless claim. The rabbit ate it last winter. But so far it does have the narrow growth pattern. Leaves are identical to the older R. fangula 'Asplenifolia' that grows as a wider bush. It is at least a U.S.D.A. zone 3 plant. The shrub in the Wayside photo looks as though it was topped and that would be consistent with my idea of the plant. One already that wide I would expect to be almost twice as high. Foliage is exactly what you see. No fall color here. I am assuming Dominion Seed sells plants too, because if they sell seed of Fine Line, then Wayside's claim of infertile berries is bogus, and it would be a bad thing for any of us to test. Comments (29)Gordonr - Started experiementing with the Danby today. I have to revise what I said about the Maytag, but I think that is mostly due to it dying it's slow death. Right after my post the next load took over an hour, but it didn't feel like it was heating. Oh well it's history now, it servered me well. First load today was 3 pair Jean's. I wanted to try denim by itself. They dried in 40 min set on cotton, dry for storage. It does say in the book that a full load is more efficient and that wasn't full. Hopefully next time I'll have more in there for that. The second load was a mixed bag of dark colored clothing. It took about 45 min, but I set it this time on the synthetic setting, which seemed to be a lower heat. After it was done, i probably should have chosen Cotton, but I want to get a feel for the different settings. I also think I will be sorting my laundry a bit differently now, to work with the dryer at it's best. I'll keep you posted. Everything came out soft, nothing was over cooked, that was a major plus. My setting choices are: cotton or synthetic and then you choose, machine iron (wettest), iron, slighly damp, dry for storage, or very dry. There is also a timed dry and an air fluff (no heat). When the cycle ends it beeps 4 times and goes into anti-crease mode. I believe that will last for up-to an hour. The dryer does reverse tumble and so far, nothing has come out wrinkled, another plus. I'll be doing another load or two tomorrow, so I will see how well that works. Hope this helps. I'm thinking I should be able to get most loads dry in 40 min or less. Not bad in my book, that's well before the washer would finish even on the shortest load and I've read on the various web sites that most dryers are timed to the washer, so this would be better than that. sue...See MoreDoes anyone have experience with the Decor Cabinet Line?
Comments (12)At one time I was considering using a designer and one of the brands she used regularly was Decor not Decora. They are made in Canada. At that time I posted to see if anyone had experience with them and got no responses except for Decora brand which isn't the same. I did find their website after some searching online. www.decorcabinets.com We decided in the end to go with a local custom cabinet maker so I can't offer anything more. Good luck....See MoreE Ktz
