Laundry Room Paint Design Dilemma

Wallpaper recommendations for this boring laundry room

Hey all, getting ready to move into this new build and I have a nice but blah laundry room. I’d like to either do wallpaper or paint, and I’m not adverse to color. I’ve tried many samples and they seem busy next to the sparkly quartz, so I’m looking for any recommendations from all of you talented people. FYI I’m planning on putting a tint on the window so I don’t have to look at the next door neighbors’ wall. 😉 TIA!

That is a really nice laundry room, but it would be a nightmare to hang wallpaper in there. It doesn't look like there is really much wall area. I would paint it blue or green, or blue-green. There are so many choices. You would have to sample to see what looks good with the undertone of the countertop. Hang a complementary roman shade on the window for some more color. Find the material for the shade first and choose a paint color from it.

Hi Rhoda - thanks for coming by to take a look. I referred to your blog as I did this project and it was incredibly helpful. Keep up the good work! Hockeymom I'll take a picture of the edges and post it. You can kind of get an idea by looking at the picture above with the clamps. I glued the moulding on flush with the edge of the door. On one of the doors I think the moulding went a little over the edge because it rubbed a little against the door next to it when we rehung them. So my son sanded both edges a bit and I had to repaint, but it was fine. I did fill in the seam between the moulding and the original door. I used spackle pretty liberally, let it dry overnight, then sanded the next morning with an electric sander to get it smooth. I think Rhoda used caulk. Any place I missed got filled in pretty well with paint. It was a little easier to have the wallpaper go almost all the way to the edge of the door (that happened on the hall cabinet doors, but the laundry room doors were too wide for a single sheet to go entirely edge to edge). valinsv - I was a little nervous about using the mitre saw, but my son (he's 19) stepped right up and started cutting angles with no problem. I had him do a couple of trial cuts first just to be sure that the 45 degrees was exact (it was). The guy we bought the saw from showed me how to use it. Next project for my son's summer break from college: baseboards! Lynn I might have to go to Albuquerque in the next couple of weeks. I've seen the pictures you've posted of your beautiful house - I'd love to help, but you're so talented I'm sure you'll have no problem with this kind of project.

That is the site from which we'd buy it. Our laundry room is roughly 9' x 12'6" and has a window and upper cupboards above the appliances. Because it is monochromatic, toile is not necessarily "busy" looking, but it all depends upon the repeat. I hope someone out there has it!

The laundry/dog room outside door will lead into a fenced area for our 2 German wired haired pointers & only be used by hubby to come & go to his shop area or get wood for wood stove. I am a big fan of wallpaper and my daughter has lined the walls of her huge closet area with PAX. Two feet (vertically) doesn’t give you a lot of pattern repeat, and how would the repeat look around the door? Your choices are limited. You can do a solid with texture…sounds. boring, but far from it. Thibaut has some great faux grasscloth looks and, even though expensive, one double roll would probably do it.

That is as neutral as you can get and you can really do any wallpaper that you like! You might consider the peel and stick ones that are available these days.

If you want privacy at the window without blocking the light, just get some lightly frosted window film from HD/Lowes and cut to size. I would just cover the lower half.

There's so much cabinetry in that room, that I think wallpaper would not be the best choice of materials. What about putting in a beautiful tile backsplash in striking colors or patterns? Here are a few examples:

I was going to suggest trying some window film also. There are a lot of different designs and it's cheap and easy to change out if you get tired of it. I used it on a window in one of my basement rooms. It was a multicolored design with vines. If you find one you really like, you could use a color from the film pattern on the walls. Personally I think wallpaper is a lot of fun in a laundry room, but it's true this particular room would require quite a bit of cutting and fitting.

You don't have a lot of wall to paper, but I think a small print would work. How about black, like the window frame?

This is from the Ceylon Collection/Thibaut and I think it would work beautifully in the laundry room.

There is a coordinating fabric if you want to do a window treatment.

Thanks for the great ideas! You guys might be right about nixing the wallpaper idea…paint might be better in this room and a fun window treatment. 🤔

Beautiful laundry room!! The only item I would add is a colorful Roman shade to your window. I am becoming a minimalist: “less is more”.

Take a look at this window film. Would look great on your window. Its easy to put it on too. There are other types and some even have a light coloring in them, so when the light hits, would be like stained glass. You may even find a color for the walls from the window film.

I would worry about moisture and heat doing a job on the wallpaper seams, but I'm not certain.

I like the idea of top down bottom up and window film! I think paint will do, and a runner rug. Maybe I’ll be fancy and do a couple of those cute labeled glass jars for pods and the scent thingies and add a couple of baskets. Thanks everyone!
